My Son just got home from school and told me that he has a school project in his civic's class. You have to pick an Amendmend and make a poster about it. Being he is also a shooter and hunter he chose the 2nd Amendment...When he told his teacher this, the response was "You CAN"T put pictures of guns on your poster". What your thoughts on this?

So do a what happens without the second amendment poster. No Guns equals. Put Lady Liberty in Chains Put a picture of the Teacher on there. Put the Hammer in Sickle in the Teachers hand a and Put a picture of the Teacher holding the Chains of Lady Liberty. And Put on the Poster, "This is America without the Constitution especially the Second Amendment"

What about pictures of ammo, scopes, loaded magazines, etc. Caption: The "Accessories" of freedom. If I could use my First Amendment rights, I would show the "Tools" of freedom. Of course, that would probably get the kid in trouble.

I would have him 2 projects. Turn in the first one about the second amendment, complete with guns, and so forth. If his teacher gives him flak, tell him to turn in he second project on the FIRST amendment. Then tell him to tell his teacher to think about how it is we are able to have amendments at all. Otherwise, we'd be speaking the Queen's english. "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

Have him bring in a blank sheet of poster paper......go in with him, "these are the rights that remain since Ms.(teachers name here) took away our first and second amendment rights.... this sh*t pisses me off...........now there frightened of Pictures.....

What grade is he in? Will getting suspended for a few days effect his GPA? Actually this may be a good way to teach him and the rest of the class the meaning of the 1st & 2nd & 14th Amendments by having all the TV coverage of you sueing them for kicking him out. Just so you understand the 14th : "Section 1. Have him do one of those "The Experts Agree Gun Control and Speech Control Works" with pics of Hitler, Mao, and Lenin. Throw in a pic of the Nazis executing people and burning books.

Regardless of the content of your son's poster, it is obvious that he will receive a lessor grade for this assigment(hence his teacher's political views). What you need to do is have a Parent/Teacher/School Administrator conference about this issue. There is no way in hell a teacher should able to cast his or her own personal beliefs upon the teachings of The Constitution. What's next? What happens when a student chooses "freedom of religion" and want to use religious artifacts on the poster. Someone from the higher up needs to be involved. And unfortunitely, if they side with the teacher, well I think you have at very, very strong case against the school for violating your son's freedomn of speech(I believe it's the 1st Amendment). Mental Note: The founding fathers grouped how many rights in the 1st Amendment? But they made sure the 2nd Amendment was devoted solely for a single right. Hmmmm.......

Unless your son is in college I'd do the following. Immediately contact the Dean of Students of the school Principal and have a discussion with him about how this particular teacher is discriminating against your son and his choice. Then go from there.

How about something along the line of a poster with pictures of dead Afhghan citizens, dead Yogoslavians, dead Africans from (insert and small warlord infested African nation here) and dead Jews from Germany 1930's with a caption: [b]THESE COUNTRIES HAVE NO SECOND AMENDMENT[/B]. Idea: Find pictures and make a collage of Revolutionary/ Civil/ Spanish American/ WWI/ WWII/ Korea/ Viet Nam War memorials that feature a statue of a man, or men holding a rifle. The one I last recall seeing is the Civil war memorial next to the old courthouse in Weatherford TX. These memorialize the brave Americans who took up arms in defense of their country. They came to the battlefield with marksmanship skills they often learned on their own in their youth. Depending on which war, or which side they fought, they may have also brought their own rifles from home to meet the threat. Perhaps the membership here could assist by taking digital photos of their local war memorial and sending them to Trucker. I'd frame the actual figure in the photo, unlike the one below. The base isn't as necessary to the message. on a close frame, seeing we're addressing ignorance here, One of the neighborhood kids told me that his history teacher said that the minutemen hid behind billboards and phone poles. I got the poor kid into hot water when I told him to tell his teacher that George Washington's white horse was light grey and that people only THOUGHT it was white because when they saw it on the 5 o'clock news it LOOKED white on the old colonial B&W TV sets. All the guys who said put something together about guns and put guns on the poster are correct. I would conference with the staff. You can NOT allow this teacher to violate your kid's Constitutional rights. This point MUST be made to the teacher and the staff. Make sure you also contact the NRA with complete details about this incident. Make those people feel the pain! In the meantime... Get a picture of the Minuteman. Put in on the poster. Have your son explain the history behind the Second Amendment to the Constitution. Why DO Americans have this unique right when virtually no other modern, "civilized" country permits its citizens to own guns? There ARE very good reasons...and those reasons are what make us so much better than those other countries. World history is clear: Armed people were free people. Unarmed people were subjects. Simplistic? Yes. True? Absolutely! ALL of the rights enumerated in our Constitution are equally important. This "teacher" does NOT have the right to deny your son his right to explain the 2nd Amendment clearly, simply because he/she disagrees with your stance on guns. I mean, its NOT like your kid is taking a gun to school! It's a freaking picture for God's sake! Article II of our Bill of Rights states: [b]"...A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."[/b] Have him read this out loud and then dissect the sentence very carefully. This simple and straightforward sentence protects our right to keep and bear arms. It is this single article that protects our right to actively defend ourselves against those who would do us harm, be they terrorist, armed robber, or crazed assassin. This article was put in second place in imporance only behind Article I not by accident. The reason our Founding Fathers included Article II in the Bill of Rights in the first place was twofold: First, as great students of history, they understood that NO society in the recorded history of mankind ever achieved any semblance of freedoms for its common citizens unless those citizens were armed. Throughout history, common men have been prevented from arming themselves by their "leaders" in order to protect the rule of the prince, potentate, king or dictator. Our Founding Fathers recognized this and acted to prevent all Americans from ever being subjigated. As to the meaning of the term "militia", I would point out that in our courts, the decision was made long ago that the term referes specifially to the population in general. This has significant historical basis in fact in our country, since the armed militia has always been an integral part of our overall national defense. From Lexington Common to Omaha Beach, our citizen soldiers have taken up arms and fought for our common defense. I would show a picture of the Lexington Common and explain what happened there. Your son might add those famous words by militia Captain Parker to his assembled farmers and townsmen, "Stand your ground. Don't fire until fired upon. But if they mean to have a war, let it begin here. Six years later we were [b]FREE[/b]...and the [b]gun[/b]...in the hands of men who were willing to die for that freedom...and could shoot straight, made it so. On Omaha Beach on 6 June 1944, the 29th Infantry Division, an Army National Guard division, landed as the first wave, right next to the famous 1st Infantry Division...The Big Red One. The 29th were a very good division, made up of mostly Vigirnians with a strong showing of men from some northern states too. They were called the "Blue And The Grey". Personally, although I would like to see some racy pics of Ugly Black Rifles [;D], I'd forgo that because it would detract from his presentation. It should be cerebral...not Hollywood. Kewl guns would titillate the boys and offend the skirts. Rather than that...he can still get his point across with more muted stuff. Having said that...I would keep VERY good records and turn this over to the NRA. I would also make a big stink to the school board (Forget any help there though...!), contact your congresscritter, and maybe even the press. Violations of the Constitution are not permitted and that is what this teacher is trying to do. Good Luck!!

If I don't get the proper response from the teacher, I will post the name of the School and teacher (he is a navy vet also)...I guess taking the AR for show and tell is out of the question...LOL....By the way, he is a sophmore in high school..Trucker

No, you can't back down... this will be a greater civics lesson than anything the teacher could possibly assign or lecture on. And if he takes a poor grade for it, then protest it to the max. I am sure you can round up friends with signs, a call to the media, etc. Tell the school you will go all the way, including a suit for denial of civil rights.

Assess the situation and if warranted, go for a project with shock value. I particularly like the holocaust collage idea followed up with the facts about disarmament. The founding fathers/nation built on gun ownership is good too but maybe too esoteric these days. You'll get all that gibberish about "no one had automatic weapons in those days etc." Go for shock value and exampled of tyranny in the last 50 years; remind them that the price of freedom is vigilance. Do not let it go. Push the issue. What the hell are they gonna do, suspend your kid? Yeah right.

1. Get this teacher fired. Not only is he violating your sons rights he is not upholding his sworn oath as a fomrer member of the military. That anarchist club chick sued her school and won for much less. Being as this is technically a first amendment issue try the ACLU, they might help, might not. 2. Post the contact info for the school so we can flood their inbox with disapproving comments about the teacher.

I just wanted to voice my position of suport again. With your son being in HIGH SCHOOL, he for damn sure should not be censured by some liberal PC teacher. I couldn't agree more with the others here who have advised to push the issue. Without the 2nd, none ot the rest could exist. It is very important to remember that in all reality, the US Constitution is a mere scrap of paper. And the vigorous defence of that scrap of paper, every letter of it, is what makes that document the second most precious item on the face of this earth. The tablets carried down the mountain by Moses are the only items that have a greater value.

The schools have enacted "Zero Tolerance" to anything that shows or depicts a firearm. Yeah, they went way overboard and I doubt if its' the Teachers fault...School Policy & all that. Hey, Trucker dude, why do you have your kids in a Public Brainwashing School anyway? Your kid deserves better, send him to a private school. Oh yeah, you'll have to give up on the Beer, Smokes and Lottery Tickets, but if you do you can afford Private Schooling or Christian Academy. Think you're up to it?

I'd be willing to bet real money that the "no guns" rule on the poster has more to do with a "Zero Tolerance" school regulation than the teacher's personal beliefs. These are the same rules that get kids expelled from school for pointing their fingers, or their chicken fingers. Geez. "Gun-Free School Zone" means "No resistance to criminal acts here."

Do like they did in the "Man with no Country". Get a page with a picture of a gun in it. Then carefully cut along the outline of the gun. Throw away the cutout part and paste the rest of the page on a poster board.

LOL, thats rich[:D] Seriously, when kids are getting expelled for talking about guns in schools it is probably not a good idea to push it. The shit is going to come down on your kid and unless he wants to do it then it would be unfair to him. Maybe have him do a First Amendment poster, with examples of "allowed" free speech: gay rights, womens rights, anti US government, and "forbidden" free speech: "guns, second amendment, hate for the UN, pro Christian, anti gay themes. Maybe an eye opener for the teacher when she says he can't do that poster either(offensive to ______ which is a protect group).

There's a bit more to this tale of billboards and phone poles.....When the kid told the teacher about Geo W's white horse, he got labeled as a smarty pants. The kid got an hour after school, scheduled for the following day. The instant school was out, I heeled my way into the classroom where the kid was sitting down, awaiting for detention period to start. I pointed at him and told him to catch the bus home. NOW! When he looked up at the teached in a second of indecision, I barked, "Don't you be afraid of that 23 yo skinny little teacher, You be afraid of ME!!" the kid fled out the door. I sat down in his spot and told the teacher,"I got the kid into this mess, I'll pay the fiddler. I owe you one hour." (reminds me of 'One jelly doughnut!') Principal called. Oddly enough, no cops called. I told the principal what happened (The whole story), told him I owed the system one hour. Principal took the easy way out. Let me sit there for the hour, I got up and left. (I insisted on spending the hour. If the kid wasn't going to get off, why should I?) The following Halloween, my house had NO toilet paper on it, nor were my pumpkins smashed, etc, etc. I guess the kids thought I was a pretty neat guy or something.( Either that or they're scared sh*tless of me.) Sometimes tossing a wrench into their little system works wonders. At Teacher's school there's no class on how to deal with a 50 YO guy and they wind up having to THINK! Scary!

Let me sit there for the hour, I got up and left. (I insisted on spending the hour. If the kid wasn't going to get off, why should I?) The following Halloween, my house had NO toilet paper on it, nor were my pumpkins smashed, etc, etc. I guess the kids thought I was a pretty neat guy or something.( Either that or they're scared sh*tless of me.) Sometimes tossing a wrench into their little system works wonders. At Teacher's school there's no class on how to deal with a 50 YO guy and they wind up having to THINK! Scary!

First time I tangled with the system was back around '70. There was a huge hotel fire, and I got arrested.(following morning thrown out, the judge actually called the cop a 'chowderhead') for standing atop my car and shouting "THEATRE! THEATRE!" I go back to the 60s as sort of an activist of sorts. I beat the draft(long story) and enlisted shortly thereafter. There's a difference between being asked and told to serve. You have to be pretty careful, though. Make no threats,or violence. Still, nothing beats ACTION! ------------------------------------------------ somebody do me a favor and get my marines and the 8yo boy thread started again? I'm at sea and this cell modem is slow. while I agree he shouldn't be censored... There was a thread a few weeks ago about a girl who was having issues with the media and school over her wearing t-shirts about anarchy or some such thing. (sorry, cant find the search anymore!) She wasn't violent, or causing a big scene that I recall, but still was punished multiple times (I think even suspended). There were a lot of members here at ar15.com that were against her, and pointing out that non-adults (and thus kids in school) DONT have the same rights as adults. I think your son should be able to do a poster on whatever he wants, especially one on our rights. But, be careful... A school policy or whatnot may just releive him of his rights. Personally, I would check in with the teachers or other authority figures and make sure that both you and them understand where the other side is coming from before doing something that may cause your son problems in school. Of course, most of us here on the forums are going to think this teachers decesion is wrong, but unfortunately, it's the teacher/school's opinion that counts, not ours.
