I've said the very same things SO many times!

Over the years we've often used VNC for remote sessions and users will get this concerned tone in their voice... "you mean you can see what I'm doing on my PC?". LOL! I always respond "YES! But I'd have to actually CARE what you do on your PC! And the only time that I CARE is when you cause me problems/work". Used to be pretty laid-back around here until my boss started going all network-nazi with the Barracuda web filter. He's been looking over everyone's shoulder for the past year and got some people disciplined.

Btw... Arf is my greatest "sin" against the network. If I wanted to surf pron/etc, I'd do it at home. What good is a boner at your desk?

Just because it doesn't look broke doesn't mean it isn't broke and certainly doesn't mean it's safe.  A Windows 98 box went out of support in 2006, meaning that no security patches have been made since that date.

My only teeney-tiny issue with them is they sometimes monitor the internet traffic.
FWIW, we only monitor internet traffic when asked to, for a specific person - usually to confirm what's already known.

Granted there are some really shitty IT people out there, most do not understand what goes into maintaining the technology around them.  If we are doing our jobs,  you will never notice us. In most instances, no one thinks about IT unless something breaks. Then it is ITs fault. A more thankless job then most realize.

We're all assholes

I just got finished locking down permissions on our client files directories to stop users from moving clients into other clients (it was originally not locked down because we were told that doing it would cause the document management program to break. They were wrong, as usual.)

It's this kind of crap that pisses me off.

A lot of my job involves looking at photos from our field techs. I need decent resolution to see things clearly, and thankfully most of our field guys take photos at their camera's max resolution, or at least 1600x1200.

These are then uploaded into our system, which re-sizes them to 1024x768. Not great, but I can make do. I believe this decision was made to reduce bandwidth usage and storage space, but I honestly don't know why.

For no apparent reason, the system is now re-sizing new photos from the field down to 640x480, which is completely unacceptable and too small for me to make out the details I need to see to do my job.

I email IT, and include several examples, on 4/15. No response yet.  Guess I'll email them again...

Yes, my little problem isn't nearly important as keeping production servers up, or keeping Exchange going. But when someone makes a change like this without notifying anyone, it is incredibly frustrating.

You don't want every new software package when it comes out.  You'd much prefer your IT guys wait until the new bugs and retraining is outweighed by increased performance.  That doesn't generally happen on release.

You will need to rebuild your PST indexes. Tonight, when you log off the network (if you log off the network), leave your computer on with outlook open. The system will work to rebuild.

The computer will rebuild when you are using it, but each time you touch the mouse or keyboard, it suspends the index rebuild.

A few thoughts.  I am a Security Engineer for a national law firm.  Office 2010 is a piece of shit.  We run 2007 and will likely do so for the forseeable future.  Be thankful you guys get to run Communicator.  There are some fields, like the legal industry, where running any sort of IM type client is a no go, for legal discovery reasons.  While probably not intended, the Office suites can co-exist just fine.

You know that you can do work while the computer updates right?

I think the biggest problem is that all PC's leave the shop with a standard image but that quickly becomes bastardized by the end user.  Sure we could lock the PC down but we don't want to hear the end users manager sniveling about how sally can't install her fish screen saver that makes her more productive.  After a few weeks of the end user screwing with the PC none of the updates or software pushes work and IT is quickly blamed.

Typically IT is hamstrung by managers and executives making calls about technologies they dont understand. The IT persons themselves tend to be very smart, although some creepers get between the cracks. They are usually ousted pretty fast and dont last long. But yes, the managers and execs are the main driving force between lengthy IT decisions and software rollouts/updates.

also, certification dont mean jack shit in IT. I have zero certs, but that doesn't mean i couldnt build the computers, servers, and network from the ground up. work experience > IT certs any day of the week. i can't count the number of IT  "certified" technicians that don't know squat about what they are certified for. but damnit, you ask them a question from that cert exam and they know it.

I like how people are blaming IT for issues where someone upstairs is too fucking cheap to spend the cash to upgrade.

Yes I am quite familiar with cheap and incompetent management.

This is always the case.  I'm an IT Director and can't do crap without CFO approval.  It's all about the money.  So don't start bitching to the IT folks, we would love to have all the latest and greatest toys.  Just no one wants to spend that kind of money.  A simple upgrade to you, could be big money. From 2007 to 2010 for our facility would cost upwards of 500k.  Just to fix some delegation issues?

Next time you want an upgrade or something new.  Create a ROI. (Return on Investment) then pitch it to the IT folks. LOL They'll just have to turn around and pitch it to the CFO/CEO anyway.

I'm one of four techs for our county .gov.
We have 1 programmer, one net admin, one assistant admin.
1 web guy, that does nothing but web stuff.
600+ users, campus spread over a 60 mile radius. Jail, road dept, courts, etc. Lots of specialized software, a mix of programs from brand new to DOS based (which are positively a joy to run on Win 7 machines).
Lots and lots of boss elected officials. Making them all happy all the time is akin to cat herding.
Lousy pay, decent hours except one week in six on-call 24/7 for the week. Good benefits.
Many, many starfish users.

Overall, we do OK I think, but always chronically behind and understaffed.

Our Windows 7 migration project is 2 years in the running.

Our Windows 7 migration is taking about that long, but we have a ton of computers spread out across three sites in FL, AZ, and MN.
