I've only just begun the journey of my first AR build. I've got my lower and a couple 30round mags to start... You know, the essentials. Now, before I've even really started the process I'm thinking that maybe I should get another lower receiver. I'm thinking if one rifle is good, then two is even better! Is there any hope to stop the whole thing from snowballing and just be happy with one rifle?

It all depends on your definition of happy. Generally no, one will make you content but not happy.

i thought it was but then i decided i need an AR of each type
SBR 300 Blkout 308 SPR 300 Blkout SBR etc of course i m a long way from completing this list but just my 2 cents lol |
Simple answer is NO
I've gone from one, to one with multiple uppers and then the uppers attached themselves to their own lowers and then they multiplied and had sub caliber babies.... Now I am back down to only two...a 5.56 carbine and a 9mm pistol.....time to start over. If I was smart, I would have had one rebarreled in 6x45. 6mm bullets are everywhere and .224's are impossible to find. |
I found that owning 1 or 2 greatly improved my skill with the weapon... especially when they are set up the same.
Think about it. 1 nice rifle with the components you want or 2 rifles where the project is never completed, or when they are completed here comes lower #3 and then the cycle continues. It's Vicious |
I have one and will only have one. My rifle is for self defense and I can only shoot one rifle at a time. My plan is to make my AR the best I can. My money goes into ammunition and upgrades such as Eotech sight, Surefire light, sling, upgrade nickel boron BCG, upgrade trigger, etc. Just my 2 cents.
Once you start it's never ending. There's always another configuration that looks useful, or just plain cool. I've been struggling for the last couple years to stop changing things and just shoot what I have.

Amen on that, my friend. It's addtictive. Fun. But additctive.

I started with one rifle, then added a 9mm & 7.62x39 upper, then later picked up more lowers for three complete rifles. Now I've got another lower waiting for an upper when prices come back to earth. My problem is that I'm cheap, and most ARs are great bang for the buck, and there's so many options for customizing. Everytime I look at another rifle over a grand I think about what kind of AR I could put together for that $$$ and back off.

Yes. build it as a pistol first. Then get the first set of rifle parts you want (prob a good Go-To set-up). You can then take your pistol apart and turn it into a rifle and then legally go back to pistol. Then get the parts you need/want for a varmint configuration.
By the time you are done you should have a good solid 3 or 4 upper/lower combinations to put onto your 1 lower. There you go, it is possible to get along with only 1 AR.... |
I started my first complete build last January. It's a 10.3" SBR and I'm waiting on optics to arrive and it will be finished. I decided I wanted a non SBR 14.5" version of the same weapon, so I'm building that now. I have two more lowers ready for builds after that. One will be a dissipator and not sure about the other. Maybe a long range/precision 6.5 Grendel? I owned a box stock A2 Bushmaster for 6 years and was content. Then I started building, and now I will likely have 3 custom builds completed my this time next year.
I've got one that COULD be my only AR, 'cause its an MRP. However, its nice to have others.
I own 1 AR and very happy with it, I do not need any more. I also own a French 49/56, an SKS, and a High Point 9mm carbine. I have variety.
It starts with just one.
Then you buy a new stock for your "one" Now you have a stock in your parts box.......which turns into another rifle. I've seen it happen from as much as a spare trigger guard. |

I'm currently on my 3rd AR-15 project, have the lower receiver completed now looking for another upper to mate it on. It takes forever for me to complete a build. I think having two AR's is enough, following the "Two is one, one is none" rule. I kind of regret starting on my 3rd AR-15 but its too late to get my money back on it so I have to finish the build. All 3 of my lowers are registered SBR's. The money spent on trying to complete my 3rd AR should've been spent on a new weapon platform, like the AK-47 or a shotgun because I don't have either but would like one. If you have the funds, I'd say build more. It will make you happy and the libtards mad.

Two, and that's what I've got myself down to.
Close in gun. SBR MK18ish clone Long range precision gun. SPR Mk12 Mod 0 |
I say 2 complete rifles and a .22lr upper is minimum
A go to rifle a training rifle and a .22 upper for plinking and cheap training. |
Well, the neat thing about an AR is you can have "one" and switch uppers.
simple answer is no.... you don't want it to be lonely..... just be careful.... they breed like rabbits ..and never lie to the wife that you promice this is the last one or you have enough ammo after this..... let her get all the heels she wants to keep the peace.........

I started out with a RRA A2 middy. Then got a 14.5 flat top upper. Than got a matching lower. Then I sold the A2. A while later, I redid the upper I have to FF the barrel. Sold all the spare parts for it to help with SBR it. Now I mightt be able to do a one for one 14.5-10.5 swap in which case Ill sell the rails to pay for a Mk18 build. I think Ill be ok for a while then. And then Im going to have to build my wife a rifle. And at least one .22 upper for training. I hate the BRD.
Its possible to be content with just one. Ive never had a lot of excess funds so Ive made do with one. Its just the moods that change. |

It starts with one my black LWRC.... then I decided I wanted to build one, so I built my 2nd... an SPR on a spikes zombie receiver... Then I happened to see an LWRC less than 300 serial numbers from mine, but in their discontinued MRE finish for an amazing price(so naturally it found a home in my safe).... The next thing I know I hear about this company called Umbrella Corporation Weapons Research Group.... of course I had to have it. Now there's 3 and a complete lower just waiting for an upper. I want more and I can't explain why. Black rifle disease is a vicious animal. Best sell me your lower and mags and be done with it before the disease gets you...
I have one AR. My limiting factor is money. If I could I would also have an SBR, SPR clone, and a .308 OBR.
I almost forgot a .22 lr trainer. |
I thought I'd just get one rifle so I ordered a .300 AAC when an opportunity came up. Then a custom builder I know had some openings and I ordered a .556. Then Daniel Defense sent me a code and now I'm building one. So 3 months ago, none and plans for only one. Now, 3 ordered.

When I found this site, I thought why does anyone need more than one AR?
I'll be starting my third this weekend. I still have two more lowers I'm going to build. No, it's nearly impossible to have just one. |
Might be possible to have one lower. With the ease of upper swaps, there's no way in Hell I could own only one upper.
I fixed my problems long ago. I have multiple everything. |
So far...but I'm starting to have more spare parts it seems. A charging handle here, a FCG there...I know another one's coming.
And probably a third after that. |
Realistically, you want at least two. One is none on the battlefield and you want to be able to grab your backup and go if your primary fails. But the technology is constantly improving, so by the end you'll want way more than just two. If a little works a lot will do wonders

Yeah, all I have is an LE6920. Another ar15 is extremely far down on my list of things I would like to have.
