See, the French are not totally stupid! They have known for a long time that you don't send French troops if you need to win.

In Mexico 3 officers and 62 legionnaires resisted 2,000 Mexicans. They held out for 11 hrs, killing and wounding 600 enemy soldiers before being wiped out. Thats a long freakin time to hold out.

A bit of history for you all. Has anyone read a book called the "Devils Guard" ? The only time the French were successful in French Indo-China was after WWII. They brought over captured SS troops that surrendered. They had two choices. Go to prison, or go to fight in Indo-China. They were the most successful army to defeat the Vietcong. They were given the name by the VC. The book has been ban for resell, I haven't been able to find it for a long time. If anyone finds a source, please pass it on to me.

Not yet, but I'm unto it. I'm pretty sure I'll find at least an electronic copy of the book.
They were the ultimate killing machines.

Careful there, you're coming awfully close to glorifying the SS ;) Btw, and apropos of nothing whatsoever: Foreign Legion romantic was quite popular in 1950s Germany, pulp fiction, movies, music...I wonder why that was? ;)

Naw, this is not gory, read "I was a combat medic". It is a true story of a Marine Doc on Iwo. Edited to add, this was the only book I ever put down just to hold my cookies.

For many of these former French colonies in Africa that is still the case. The French train and maintain bases there, as well as having a history of intervention and other machinations. The currency is some French sponsered multi-country African franc. I think Mali actually receives in foreign aid almost as much as it's entire budget. That's a lot of influence. [;)]

Glorifying the SS? Why not, give it another 100 years and it won’t be any different than glorifying pirates, brutal highway-men (like Robin Hood), us Johnny Rebs, or any other of history’s less than savory groups. Sure they fought for the wrong side and did a fair bit of evil, but one can respect their ability and esprit’d’corps, their tactics, and especially their equiptment. I'd go a round in the ring with Mike Tyson for a MKb42(h), by all accounts the finest assault rifle ever. Love their camo too. Of course I’ve always been accused of ‘rooting for the bad guy’. Even as a young ‘un, I liked Darth Vader better than Luke Skywalker, and always knew he had some redeeming quality. [X] Ryan

I'm sure the French came in at the behest of the government that's facing rebellion. They did the same thing in Chad, and in Rwanda. The French feel an obligation to defend French-speaking peoples, kind of strange. In Rwanda, they protected one of the ethnic groups (the French speaking ones) while they committed genocidal atrocities against the English.

BFD. 187 Texans held off the entire Mexican army in a little place called The Alamo. Seems the Mexicans have a nasty habbit of out numbering the good guys up front but getting the dog pooky kicked out of them anyway.

I came across this excerpt from the book. "It is evident that the Free World was already looking toward America as the Lord Deliverer and Protector. Surely America is a great country, wealthy and very advanced. But so was the Roman Empire in its own time. Wealth is not a precondition of power and history tells that the richer a nation grows, the weaker it becomes. It was not a wealthier or a more advanced nation that destroyed the Roman Empire. It was the barbarians!"
