Quoted: Always preferred the taste of SMB or my real favorite from the old days in Bangkok, Singha.

Singha was really good beer.  I had a bottle of it a few years ago after a 40 year gap and it still tasted great!
ps--wasn't a Sailor or Marine, but my first eyeball-popping exposure to naval/marine shenanigans was at the Blue Fox in Tijuana:

anybody remember the Riviera Club in San Juan, P.R.?

best looking "ladies" in the carribean.

the bar had a revolving stage with a calypso band that was booed every time they struck up "anchors aweigh".

a short elevator ride took you up to the "hotel".

$10 and $2...

still have a mimegraph sheet with all the off limits bars in San Juan.

Off limits bar list in San Juan?
I thought those were the lists of bars where the Chiefs would be.

Not a lot of you guys pulled liberty in New Zealand -

The Atami Bath House
The Dolls House
Coyote Street Bar & Restaurant
Christchurch Casino
Bailies Irish Bar

A lot of those places were destroyed due to the earthquakes in NZ.

Or if you were in Antarctica -
The Chiefs Club
Scott Base Pub (New Zealand research station)
The Acey-Ducey Club
Willie Field Tavern

The Kangaroo Pub In Kowloon might not have been a squid bar before we got there, but it certainly was when we pulled in.

What is about Aussies that they would rather fight than have sex with women?

It was the same in Perth/Freemantle...which made it very, very nice for us American boys who were more than willing to entertain our Aussie lady friends.

Despite all the debauchery at the...interesting...ports, I'll always swear that Perth/Freemantle was the best liberty I've ever had...hands down.
Aussies are just fucking cool.  No other way to say it.
Damn near felt like coming home...in some ways, more so.

Some great memories here gang!!...

Trader John's in Pensacola, FL was a hoot..

Would I do it again??

Fuck Yeah!!

Oh yeah, Trader Johns. Legendary among Naval Aviators and air crews. Given mention in An Officer and A Gentleman, as the cadets went to called "TJ's". Sad day when it closed.

I've heard many stories from my mom and dad about that place. They knew trader Jon quite well and spoke fondly of him and his eccentric nature.

The bar itself was sold after Jon had a stroke and has since closed. Its been sitting as an empty building since 2007 and IIRC most of the memorabilia was sold/donated to the NAS museum.
