Use creative measures to rid streets of guns

Regarding the article on police shootings that ended with a request for anyone with information to call the Atlanta police homicide headquarters ("String of shootings gives police little time to catch their breath," Metro, Aug. 4): I have important information regarding each of these five crimes. Based on my careful review, I have concluded that they are all connected. That's right! The evidence speaks for itself. In each reported case, a gun was used.

I propose that we forget these periodic, feeble attempts to get guns off the streets by conducting "amnesty" programs, whereby you can turn your guns in to the police with no questions asked.

Instead, I propose establishing a meaningful "amnesty" program at federally funded health clinics, where any resident may turn in his gun for a penile implant or other such medically indicated treatment for impotence. If successful, the program could eventually be expanded, to further encourage gun owners by allowing them to turn in the "bullets" for doses of Viagra, in a one-for-one exchange. So as not to appear gender-biased, I would propose the same treatment for male or female "recovering" gun owners.

A few weeks ago, the AJC printed a letter by a man who stated that 'there is no such thing as a good white person'.  Now you print a letter from Louis Valente insinuating that gun owners are impotent, need penile implants, and should have prescriptions to Viagra.  Both of these letters are from the left side of the political spectrum, based on the content.  If someone had written that 'there is no such thing as a good black person' or stated that gun control advocates are impotent, the letters would have never gotten published.  If they had, there would have been a cry of 'racism' relating to the first letter, and a tirade about how those on the right are stupid for writing such a letter in both cases.  If both letters weren't such infantile, petty, shabby attempts at insults, they would be infuriating.  As it is, they are merely laughable attempts by two people who don't have a clue.

Mr. Valente never mentioned anything about getting tough on those who would use guns in a crime.  NO, that would be logical.  He rants at all gun owners while the guns being used in these crimes were most likely obtained illegally and being used by those whose criminal background or age precludes them from legally owning a gun.  Those are the facts, look them up.  I guess that would be asking too much.  The gun control advocates, who are supposedly the intellectual crowd, never rely on facts, just insults and name calling.  They rely on lies put out by groups like HCI and VPC for their 'facts' and never bother to explore the truth.  

They ignore the fact that since England and Australia practically banned guns, their violent crime rates have skyrocketed.  These facts are from the respective governments websites.  

They ignore the fact that in several studies, including a UN study, the US is anywhere from seventh to fifteenth of the industrialized nations as far as per capita violent crimes go.  

They like to spout the party line of the gun control advocates that we are the most violent country on earth, but the FACTS do not bear this out.  

They like to talk about terrorists buying their guns here at gunshows when that makes absolutely no sense.  Why would a terrorist come here, pay upwards of $800 for a semi-automatic rifle and have to smuggle it across several borders when they can go to several middle eastern and African countries and buy fully automatic M16s and AK47s for $300 or less and have no problem getting it to where they want it.

They ignore the FACT that 99.8 percent of all guns in this country are NEVER used in a crime and 99.99 percent of guns obtained legally are never used in a crime.  They would punish those 99.99 percent of law abiding gun owners for the misdeeds of a few non-law abiding gun owners.  Reminds you of grade school, doesn't it.  Again, a very infantile approach.

The entire gun control advocacy system is based on emotional responses to the lies that they put out.  They count on people not bothering to check out the facts for themselves and they, again the supposed intellects, resort to name calling and innuendos, as Mr. Valente has done with this letter.

These people just don't understand how things are. If there no such thing as a gun... and bad guys were running people over in automobiles, killing people with axes, using hammers excusively; would they be crying to ban those things as well?

No. It's a short sighted solution for a problem in society.
