Sprechen sie deutch?

Ya, aber nicht mehr.

That's about the extent of what I remember from german class....obviously not much!  and it's probably horribly wrong as it is.

Yup.
Zielfen = aiming; rohr = tube or pipe ; Zielfernrohr = aiming tube
A very precise description, don't you think? Very German.

While "Zielfernrohr" (or the under German gunnies common abbreviation "ZF"!) is the correct word, your etymology is wrong.

Zielfernrohr consists of Ziel (to aim) and Fernrohr, a literal translation of "telescope".

You are of course correct.

So instead my answer would be:
Zielen = aiming
Fern = distance, far away
Rohr = tube or pipe
Zielfernrohr = aiming-far-tube [;)]
