Seems built up static charges in pickup truck bedliners have caused portable gas cans to explode while being filled on the liner. www.ehs.umaryland.edu/NewsArticles/pr11.htm

Not to mention those yahoos you don't bother to fasten them down and end up leaving them in the traffic lanes. Nice surprise to top an overpass on my scoot one day to find one laying in the lane I'm driving in! Whew, close call .... then I spent 10 minutes trying to figure out if I could somehow manage to tote it home.....NOT! Mike

These people obviously can't read. Here in Va at least there are warning sticker on the pumps that say NEVER fill a portable gas container off the ground. ALWAYS place it on the ground to prevent static. [rolleyes]

ECS It even goes further to add that the pump nozzle should be in contact with the container being filled. Meaning keep the nozzle touching the inside edge of the opening on the can. This will "ground" the whole set up, reducing the risk of a static spark, which considering it's proximity to a highly explosive material, is not a bad thing. Common sense tells you that a plastic gas can, sliding around on a plastic bed liner is a recipe for disaster.

Thats another reason why I had a Rhino Liner put in my truck.

[Last Edit: 6/28/2002 4:42:30 AM EDT by QShok]
Chevron USA has reported several instances of metal gas cans exploding while being filled in the backs of pickup trucks at service stations. In a warning published in Chevron's Marketing Bulletin 36-1904, Chevron states that the insulated effect of the plastic liners found in the back of many pickup trucks prevents the static charge, generated by gasoline flowing into a metal can, from grounding. As the charge builds, it can create a static spark between the can and the gas nozzle. Chevron is advising that all cans should be placed on the ground away from vehicles and people when being filled.

I think this only concerns metal gas cans. Shok

Any bedliner I've ever purchased for my company over the last 5 years comes with a warning sticker that states never to fill up any gas container inside the bed of a pickup for that reason. In addition, the truck bed can accumulate and trap fumes also. Your not supposed to refuel your car while smoking a cigarette either. However, people still do it.

You are also supposed to SHUT OFF YOUR CAR when you refuel. What type of person pours gasoline into a running car? People are so friggin stupid. Av.

I thought this thread refered to the "Herculiner on my hootus" incident that showed up on 4x4 board many months ago.
