How is this done? I already tried to do it through properties but that doesnt seem to work. Is there anyway to restrict access to files with a password challenge everytime access is attempted?

You neglected to mention which version of Windows.

In Windows 95, 98, and ME, there is NO security whatsoever in the Operating System. In Windows NT, 2000, and XP, you can set permissions via the Properties tab.

Locking down the porn, huh?

Can't do this without an NT based system.  (NT, 2000.)  And even then, access would be based on whoever was logged in at the time.

Your best bet is to find a 3rd party program.

PGP desktop security has a utility to create an encrypted file that will emulate as a HD, which requires a password to access.

The WINZIP compression program has an optional rudimentary password system, where the program will not un/de-compress a file until the correct password is supplied. This system is not up to NSA security standards but it is great at preventing casual prying eyes. http://www.winzip.com/

Oh yeah im on 98. Thanks for the replies guys. And yes locking down the porn is the goal, Dont want the kiddies getting into it.

Is there any crypto software out there that is up to NSA standards? Any Freeware?

Shhhh.... Don't tell anyone else, but....

SafeHouse is a product that creates a volume that can be encrypted and they have a free trial version at http://www.pcdynamics.com/SafeHouse/. I tested and implemented this, on a very small scale, where I work. It has one possibly bad drawback though.

There are also lots free products here http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/security/fwencrypt.shtml, but I haven't tested/tried any of them.

Even with NT or 2000 you need to be using NTFS instead of FAT32 to have the file security features.
