How long does it take a lost toenail to grow back?

How great is the discomfort/disability until it does?

Big toe, left foot:  Hurt like hell until a blister underneath the nail popped.  After that, did not hurt at all.  Once the nail fell off(ok, was pried off) the "skin" underneath was tender until real skin grew back, a few days.  Keep covered with bandaid and 1st aid creme.

Took a little over a year to grow back completely.

9 to 12 months.

Be careful not to damage the nail bed area, or it will remain loose in that area.  Only about 10% or less of the nail growth comes from the area under the nail, the majority comes from the  nail matrix under the "cuticle" and skin at the back of the nail.

If you have Athletes foot, now is the time to treat it, and keep your feet clean and dry (especially between your toes), as the new nail and bed area can pick up a fungal infection very easily (makes for a nasty looking nail later on).

Minimal discomfort once the nail is gone--as has been said before, the initial trauma is what hurts.

I've lost 4 toenails all at the same time before. Booth big toes, the one next to the right big toe, and the little toenail on the left foot.

How did you manage to mangle four toes at once?

Geez, funny you should ask.
I woke up the other morning and my leg hurt like hell; so did my left big toe...[rolleyes]
I had cut the toenail a little short and I guess I missed a corner and it grew a tiny "spear" that had grown into the flesh, causing a painful infected area and apparently it had spread up into my leg.
YOWWWeeee! [shock]
I went in later that night and dug in to release the pus (pussy?) pressure.  Great, huh?
THAT is pain.
Since I'm currently on medication for the 'abcessed tooth'...I slammed a couple of Amoxicillin caps and some Ibuprofen.
What a freakin' mess I am this week.
Wait'll you guys get the 'mid 40's' breakdowns. [;D]

Ran over my big toe with a 2500# (loaded) solid wheeled towmotor..  Nail took years to look anything like normal and is still "different" after 24 years...   OUCH!!!

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE GROSSED OUT, DON'T READ THE REST OF THIS!!

DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU!!

I lost a toenail once. The circumstances are unimportant. It was about to fall off for a while, but when it finally did in the shower, I took it back to my room (in the barracks), and slipped it into an open bag of potato chips that my roommate had.

Now, the gross part is not that he crunched on it and puked or something. The gross part is, he finished the bag of chips, and never even noticed.

Dude ate my toenail. If he woulda chomped it and spit it out, I woulda told him, and laughed my ass off. But he chowed it. How the fuck would you explain some shit like that?

Lost a toenail??

Make up a flyer with a picture of your mangled toe and a picture of the opposite toe for comparison.

Hang them around town. Light poles, street signs, grocery store bulletin boards etc.

Seems to always work for lost dogs.

I dropped a big vase on my toe helping a friend move once. It swelled up so bad I almost passed out when I lowered my leg. But, my handy dremel tool and a small bit took care of the pressure.......

When I played soccer in HS I always had trouble with ingrown toenails on my big toes.  No matter what they would ingrow so as a last resort the stupid doctor guy said hey lets just take the toenail off so it will grow back right.  I was up and around on it the day after and kicking about 7 - 10 days later and playing ~ 14 days later.  Toenail was still messed up.  Anyway went through that 3 times before I found a doctor who knew what he has doing and he just killed the root on the sides of the nail.  Now the sides don't grow and no more ingrown toenail, much better.  Took about 6 months to grow back completely.

No, didn't graduate yet, just starting my 4th year.  I'm going to skip my graduation next year to make it to the BRC.

I think I'd be out on that one. I wouldn't mind being a cosmetic surgeon specializing in plastic tits though [:)]
