Go traditional. Get you a caplock Hawkins or Pennsylvania or Kentucky rifle.

i shoot a model 1861 springfield (enfields are good too) clone in .58 caliber. VERY satisfying. also very dirty. gentle blackpowder shove, resounding BOOM!, immense cloud of smoke. downrange, the "big ol' chunk o' lead" goes "THWAP!" when it hits the berm. wonderful!
the springfield is a big rifle, and runs about $450. the sights are poor, you can't get .58 cal minie' bullets at wal-mart and you've absolutely got to keep it clean. but it's a beautiful piece, and it's got some history.
lady lurker uses a .50 cal hawken. i taught her to use minie' bullets instead of patched balls, and she says it's much more pleasant to shoot.
a further note i learned the hard way. if you reenact, you MUST use black powder. pyrodex does not burn well unless rammed.
