I just finished John Christopher's "No Blade of Grass." This is a SHTF story, written back in 1956, about what happens when there is a widespread crop failure.
I had been reluctant to read this book, because: what could I possibly get out of a book written in the 50's, with the story taking place in England? Well, I was wrong, it was a great book! It was hard to put down.
What surprised me was the amount of man-on-man violence/death the author included. Most SHTF books I've read focus on the technical aspects of getting ready and going through it, but this book focuses on the personal aspects (a/k/a the kill or be killed (in a personal way) aspects). Its not to heavy on the sexy stuff (guns, equipment, etc...), it instead focuses on the psychological aspects. There are several useful nuggets of information one can get from this book.
