White House-AP) -- To the strains of Duke Ellington's "Take the A Train", President Bush has been saluting black music in America. At an event in the White House East Room, Bush said the music of African-Americans has set a worldwide standard for originality and authenticity. Entertainment was provided by the chorus of Duke Ellington High School from Washington. Also joining the party was the queen of Gospel, Albertina Walker, who said she felt "better than blessed" to take part. Bush says the honest music sung and performed by African-Americans reflects the "suffering and the triumph" of the black experience in this country.

There's nothing wrong with that. Ray Charles, Buddy Guy, BB King, and a host of others have made a huge impression on modern music. We wouldn't have Rock and Roll if not for them, who even coined the name.

I still dislike the whole hyphenated American thing, but what can one do?

I for one love Duke Ellington. Most American music has elements of African-American/Black music, Jazz, Rock, Gospel, and on and on. That includes Country and especially Bluegrass; black musicians heavily influenced Bill Monroe in his early years. African-American/Black music has had a huge influence on American music and culture and that is worth saluting. Hell, Louie Armstrong is the most important/influential American musician that lived. Mauser88 Were you advertising this fact or trying to get at something else.

Well, that's what I mean. Since you listen to that type/era of music, I was thinking you could tell me about groups that were similar to the Temptations in the same perion. Probably be a snap for you.

I like Wagner, Bach, Beethoven, Bluegrass, Celtic, the Grateful Dead, as well as Mississippi mudflat negro blues.
You can call my tastes "diverse".
