DVD uses an implementation of MPEG-2, as does DSS.  You'd need DVD mastering software that could convert your raw video into this format.

But the bigger problem is that there is no standard (well, actually, there are three competing standards) for DVD-Rs.  Currently, only some models of the same brand of DVD players will read DVD-Rs.  It's kind of the VHS vs. Beta all over again.  Until there's a clear winner, and everyone adopts it, I'd recommend sitting the whole DVD-R thing out.  Otherwise you risk investing in a "standard" that will be abandoned.  When was the last time you saw a Beta tape?

In the meantime, see if VCD's work in your DVD player.  They work in about 80% of the ones I have tried.  I usually write an mpg with a program called TMPGEnc.
