As an always gun, I carry a 32 Seecamp, and am on a list for the 380. Otherwise I feel well heeled with a 40 S&W, 45ACP, 357 Mag. Own a 9mm, but don't seem to carry it.
It sometimes boils down to the gun you have with you. I can hit a 3 inch target always with the seecamp at 7 yards. |

A .38 snubby. This caliber gun has put many a men in the ground.

.357 snubby with +P .38 loads as a minimum. [i]Maybe[/i] 9x18 Makarov.

In Texas, nothing smaller than the .50AE will do. .50BMG is preferrable, though [:D]

To my mind, if your life is in danger, you may only get one hit, so it better be a good one. I wouldn't carry less than a .38+p.
