To those of you that collect coins and currency...Are the bills that were produced just prior to the new security upgrades like the strip and the different size numerals etc, have any greater value? My brother has (2) $100.00 bills from the late 70's early 80's and he heard that they may have a collector value.
Any truth to this? Thanks

Any old bill that is in good shape has collecter value to it.   I have a 1899 one dollar bill, almost perfect shape worth over $120.   It is killer, it has a huge eagle in the middle with Lincon on the left and Grant on the right.

Thank you raf. My neighbor just told me that there was some type of currency in the 40's or 50's known as "silver certificates", they were the same value as the denomination for ex. a five dollar bill was $5.00, but they had a different shade of ink and there was sort of inscription designating it a "certificate".

Yep, the silver certificates were supposed to be exchangeable on demand for hard money.  They are moderately collectable depending on condition -- it's always worth hanging on to one.  A friend got one in change from a casino a couple of years ago.

I think the feds destroy them as they come through.

Also, half-dollars still had silver in them up until about 1970 or 1971, even though the rest of the coinage had been turned into copper/nickel by 1965.  Worth saving them;  most people don't notice, and they'll fetch a little more than the new ones.
