I would like to get a copy of my fathers service record , he passed away 10 years ago. I have his dogtag, etc. Know he was in the 7th Armored, saw action in Germany, France, maybe Belgium , wounded outside Bastogne, received bronze star. Who do I write to, what do i need to supply them with, what are the chances the records were destroyed in the fire ?
Thanks,

What you need is a SF180, which you may download from this site:http://www.nara.gov/regional/mprsf180.html

Take it from there!

Thanks for the info. I'm going to send in for mine and my father's.

Did you notice the link to the "Cold War Recognition Certificate".
In accordance with section 1084 of the Fiscal Year 1998 National Defense Authorization Act, the Secretary of Defense approved awarding Cold War Recognition Certificates to all members of the armed forces and qualified federal government civilian personnel who faithfully and honorably served the United States anytime during the Cold War era, which is defined as Sept. 2, 1945 to Dec. 26, 1991.

I had never heard of this, but I'm going to apply for it. I'll have to check with Dad to see when he was discharged. He may have been discharged before 9/2/45.

The link for the Certificate is:

You're mighty welcome, rogerb.

In the pre-Internet days, you had to write off for that Form SF180, and wait weeks for it to be sent to you.

Now it's a easy as downloading lordtrader's porn!

Whoops, I guess I shouldn't have said that!
