...install a friendly, representative government? A similar strategy worked so well for Germany and Japan after WWII, I can't understand why that isn't the model for each and every nation we defeat in war. Why aren't we doing that in Afghanistan??? Can anyone shed some light on this for me? -kill-9

You can install any type of government you want in Afghanistan but it will do no good. The country has been embroiled in conflict among its dozens of warlords for centuries. There is absolutely no way you can get all of the warring factions, tribes, and warlords to agree on anything. To add insult to injury most of these factions are split along ethnic/religious lines which makes it that much mor difficult to find a leader which all the different ethnic tribes will accept. We won't even get into the fact that the proliferation of weapons available to these tribes will ensure many, many more wonderful years of ethnic warring among themselves. The only time the Afghan people will unite is when faced with an invasion from outside their borders (e.g. The Soviet Union).

For the same simple reason that all Third World countries stay Thirld World: you can't polish a turd.

because, with the one exception of Israel, which is a very unique circumstance, there is no such thing as a friendly government in the middle east. The media, in their constant quest to stay PC, doesn't talk about it, but the simple fact is that arabs (musilms, actually) HATE America and Americans by a 99.9% majority. They have been taught it since birth, it is the way of the world, and it will not change. Screw the PC and tell it like it is, this is just the way it is. We can dominate by force where and when we need to, or we can leave them alone (which won't help anything BTW). Personally, and I am not racist, but I know how they feel, because of their hatred and wanting to hurt us, I really have no use for any of the damned middle east. I have never hurt another human being but when I saw the palestinians dancing in the street in joy over the september 11 attacks, I wished to hell I was in that street with a ma duece. I would have burned it dry. It's a simple matter of when you hate us, I have no use for you. Mike

That point could be debated. German politicians and the general population have been de-balled in way it's not even funny anymore. Instead of running all over Poland and Frnace, the German army get's lost on their way to Afghanistan and has to ask for directions and a ride. German gun owners are fighting _for_ a California style gun legislation, because that would be an improvement for them. Taxes exceed 60% (85% effectively), political correctness, thought police, censorship, anti-Americanism is everybody's "progressive way of thinking", socialist, communist and enviro-nazis are officially make up the elected goverment..... In short: [puke]

You mean it's the proliferation of weapons that causes violence?? You sure you're at the right web site??

That is what we are doing in Afghanistan. We tried in Iraq with the Kurds, but that effort collapsed several years ago in the face of a well-run Iraqi intelligence operation and we allowed the Turks to finish cleaning it up when the remnants expressed their hostility to Turkey. We will probably see a US-installed friendly government in Iraq within the next year or so. Be patient. We have to take the current one out, first.
