police went to a strip mall after receiving two calls about a man vandalizing cars. When police arrived, the caller pointed out Cho, of La Habra, as the man responsible.
Witnesses in the first trial testified to seeing Cho approach the officers with a tire iron and ignore several commands to drop the object before the officers fired.
Plaintiffs' attorneys argued that Cho was 12 to 14 feet away from the officers, giving them ample time to use pepper spray, a Taser or a police dog, which was in Jaime's patrol car, to help apprehend Cho.
Praet contended that Cho was closer to the officers and that legally they could use lethal force if they felt their lives were in danger.
Toxicology reports revealed that Cho had marijuana in his system.

If 21 feet is the accepted distance for lethal response from a knife wielding subject why is 12-14 feet for a someone wielding a tire iron not considered acceptable?

No reason. Shouldn't be an issue.

It appears the issue was the vandal was Korean and the cops were not.

1st civil trial ended in a mistrial (5-3).

It was probably cheaper to pay them than to have another trial.

Sigh, they deserve nothing.

This. They settled. Cities and Counties do it all the time.

Why the bloody fuck is there a distance limit? Have we learned nothing from the Teuller drill? Hell 2 good steps from 14 feet if you're 6 foot tall puts you in tire iron's reach.

Someone comes at me with a crowbar in a parking lot, they are getting shot. I'm with the officers on this one.

ETA:

Correction, tire iron.

Drudge had a story yesterday about $12,000,000 in stimulus funds going to teach uncircumsized South African men to wash themselves after sex, to see if it has an affect on AIDS.

That's 40 of your stories to get men in another country to wash their dicks.
