My company, Sikorsky, just released that a helicopter has achieved 250 knots in level flight.

The Sikorsky X-2 made that achievement today. It topped out at 260 knots during a shallow dive.

Reports state that the helicopter could have gone faster in level flight but todays test was pegged for 250 kts.

That's wicked fast in a sling wing.

Nice. Just need to make it official to kick the Lynx off the record book.

To all the helicopter pilots out there.... good luck.

I wish you a more successful flying experience than I've ever had in one.

iirc the official balls to the wall record flight is scheduled for November or December.

260 knots? Fuck that. 120 is fast enough for me.

Cool. Our company has bought and uses a lot of Sikorsky's. Great aircraft IMO.

Nicely done! My last USNR CO works in CT on that project. I wish I had the opportunity to fly one!

Contra-rotating rotors, a pusher propeller, and some kind of vibration reduction system similar in concept to noise canceling headphones. Pretty cool.

No offense OP, but as an employee of a company that works with Sikorsky, I have no clue how you guys stay in business.

There are old pilots and there are bold pilots....

No offense taken - all I can say is having worked for other major defense companies I think the same of all of them.

You all were our first S-92 customers? The black and yellow paint scheme iirc?

I work the UH-60 side.

That is nice, but a helicopter has never taken me someplace I wanted to go; and of all the places they have taken me, I sure as hell did not want to get there any faster.

Psssst....hey OP, tell the engineers they put the fucking tail rotor on sideways!

As an ex-UH-1H crew-chief, I can say the UH-60 is a bad mofo. That X2 is surely a sign of things to come in rotary wing technology.

How can it be both level flight and shallow dive? Serious question, not trying to be an ass.

It did 250 knots during the level flight speed test. During the test flight that lasted 1.1 hours they also did a shallow dive at the same settings that gave 260 knots and pushed it to 260 with the help of gravity. Two different attitudes.

However, official speed records tend to be level flight.

Got it, thanks for the explanation.

No matter how you slice, dice, parse, or mangle it that is just plain awesome.

Sort of a modern version of the AH-56 Cheyenne

It can indeed hover. The first flight tests were actually at hover.
