Awesome! Our lab will crawl out over mountain lake ice and swim for an unbelievable amount of time. She also has developed a fondness for goose poop at our local lake....

Yeah our neighborhood lake is over run with Canada Geese and the shoreline in places is covered in goose poop. Im kind of afraid she will get something from it, so we dont go there too much.

My lab seemed scared the first time out.

That lasted about 7 secs. I got tired of throwing the ball after awhile.

I remember that day. Lab was like wtf is this? Then he just started wowing out and I have never seen a dog that happy. Good times.

My lab loves these toys for river time.

KONG WUBBA

I suppose a stick works just as well, but I bought the orange one so we don't lose it.

No shes just a house dog. I dont even hunt, but I love to watch them in the water. They are simply made for it.

My chocolate lab loves the water too. It was a new experience for him to go to the river with me (these pics were from last summer at the beach) a few weeks ago... he kept trying to swim out to the middle where the current was really fast, which I'd have no problem with if he had a dog life vest on. The current there is hard for ME to swim in, much less him.

It seems like they have no concept of how far is far enough, or how long they can swim. She has already scared me several times.

When I was a kid, we had a Border Collie/Black Lab/Norwegian Elk Hound mix that loved the water. You had to be careful if you were fishing too, because she'd lunge at lures if they were passing by her.

It's what they do, they've been bred for it for centuries.
Get a throw "bumper" for her.
Work a starter pistol into the act if you're feeling froggy.

I got a "free" lab puppy from a card board box in front of a K-Mart 20 years ago. She was the best dog I've ever had, a member of the pack, she died at the age of 13 (about 7 years ago) from old age.

My basset hound chihuhua mix has webbed feet i wouldnt think either one of them are good swimmers though lol. I took her to the pool last week for her first water experiance she didnt seem all to thrilled about  she did swim pretty fast back to the steps to get out .

We got him at age 4 and it was like he never seen water except for a bath.   We got him so that he will walk into the water until he can't stand and then swim right or left along the shore.   Baby steps.

I formerly had a Black Lab just like you describe. Absolutely refused to go in water of anykind.  One day we had her out at my friend's lake front cabin.  She took off at a run towards the lake.  My buddy says, "She's going for a swim..."  I reply, "No, this dog WILL NOT swim, you can't force her into water..."  Fucking dog proves me wrong by sprinting a quarter mile to the dock, down  the dock and leaping into the water.  The dog then procedes to swim all the way across the lake and back, about a 30 minute swim.  We'd had this dog since she was a pup and she was about three at the time.  It was like somebody just flipped a switch.  Loved water after that, couldn't keep her out.
