I sometimes call my sons "Son" .  Sometimes it is out of respect for something they have done, sometimes it is not. They know the difference.

When my sons were small we took them to Disney World. We were standing in line and an older couple was behind us. The woman was talking to my wife and then my oldest (about 9 or 10 at the time). The woman asked him what he was called. He said, "my name is Ryan but my dad mostly just calls me "knucklehead".   I kinda felt bad after that but the woman came back really fast and said. "Hey, that's what my dad called me too."

My Dad calls me son, I call my son's boys.  They are 25 and 21 and they will always be my boys, or singularly, boy.

I don't think I have damaged them mentally by it.

Mine gets addresed as 'boy' especially when he's done something wrong, otherwise it's his name.

My dad addressed me that way ONCE.

He loooked at me and said, "Boy."

I looked at him and said, "Yes, Tarzan."

Broke him of that habit quick.

Dad had a pretty good sense of humor. He occasionally chalked one up to the devil.

I've always called my son by his name.  Except sometimes in front of his friends, particularly girlfriends, I call him Baby or, if I'm talking about him, The Baby.  He's twenty-six and for some reason, he finds this hysterically funny which, of course, is why I do it.

My son is 22

so I usually call him by his name

Growing up he had a lot of nicknames:

Rock Boy - When I had him picking rocks from the Garden
Digger - When I had him digging holes

and so forth

I use his name or we call him "Bub" or "Bubs" (short for Bubba - his name is acutally Kyle - Bubba is just a nickname).

Never called him "Son".

As a matter of fact, My 13 year old and I were setting up our popup camper last night. I called him son, and then paused and reflected on how good it sounded because he is so awesome and I am so proud of him.

My dad sometimes calls me son.

It really bugs me when other guys do that though.   Say if I walk in somewhere and the guy working is an older guy he will say "Hey son, how are ya today?"    I'm not your kid, so don't call me son, ok gramps?
