I really wish they didn't have Denver in the story.
Too many liberal fools here as-is. The last thing we need is an influx of people who can't stand their ground or take responsibility for their survival (i.e. Democrats).
My WAG is, Denver will get sorted out in the first winter. When the power grid goes down, Denver will be in the dark, cold and without raw petroleum to refine... attempting to unlock the oil shale without technical support is going to take a decade or longer even under the best circumstances. It'll be prime time for cannibals. Lots of frozen meat to sort through.
Unless you've already made your contacts and have a living situation up and running, if the U.S. economy tanks and NA collapses into some form of revolution or anarchy, you're probably not going to be 'welcomed' to any of those places mentioned unless you have something of value, extreme value like a technology that will benefit the country you're wanting refuge in. Unless you arrive with a mercenary army protecting you, or can buy one when you arrive, you won't be jackshit... I don't care to work on a fishing boat or become a miner.
Trying to escape the country during an economic collapse? Good luck.
