I just remembered everybody being an asshole to the guy.
Instead of showing differing viewpoints, everybody dropped all forms of decency and acted like a bunch of fucking teenagers

Ass fuckim.  He deserved it, coming in here with a condescending attitude, talking down to us with his preconceived notions.
All I remember was him asking a question for a book he was writing, giving some background on himself, and everybody jumping on his shit.
And after a ton of members are rude, he calls them out on being dickheads, and gets in trouble for it.

How about we try to educate people instead of scare them away?

He's a journalist.

That means he was here not to be educated but to find information that he can use to push his agenda. You can't trust reporters.

Ah, just the right thing to do to a decent and fair minded writer about guns who is published in one of the premier, genuinely Tier 1 American publication

decent and fair minded?

and harpers isn't premier or tier anything

Take a bit of time out of your busy day, and go to a large book store, and find the wall or the shelves where they keep periodicals.

Take a look, and acquaint yourself with the number of different magazines.

You'll some are just pornography, some are about cars, about boats perhaps, certainly a great many on fitness, a few on guns, an awful lot for women, and and equally awful lot for men, several about women's fashion, several about men's, a few about travel, perhaps one or two about knives or aviation, several on cooking, several on losing weight, really, almost any topic you could think of.

Now, acquaint yourself with these magazines, and then, when you're done, take down a few of the better sort, the sort that the people who care about knowing and quality get at home, and purchase in airports when they travel.  There are only a few in this august and rarefied company.

The preeminent one is, as it long has been, the New Yorker, it's peer is the Economist, a notch below those two are Harper's and the Atlantic. You could probably include the Council on Foreign Relations' journal to be up there as well, except for the relative narrowness of it's scope.

It's clear now that there are indeed tiers to the magazine world.  Tier one, led by the New Yorker and the Economist at the paramount pinnacle, consists of those two, Harper's, the CFR, and the Atlantic.

Second tier would be the better interest-specific magazines, mainly Conde Nast's stuff, and of course Vogue. Rolling Stone might make the cut, and the National Geographic society, belongs perhaps indeed to the top tier, nevertheless reigns over the science magazines.

The third tear would be all the demographic minded gimmicky rubbish, don't you agree?

Why yes , yes I do agree .....Is your saucer out of fuel ?

He was not interested in education.  He was just looking for ammunition to fuel his hit job book to make us look like neanderthals.

And we played right into his hands by acting like a bunch of closed minded hillbillies.  That thread left a bad taste in my mouth

But I guess it is GD after all

Read his fucking bio.

What did you expect, the red carpet?

I dont feel like it warranted being rude, but I'm the minority here

You are, and here's why: Some (most?) of us are tired of constantly turning the other cheek and extending the proverbial olive branch to someone like him, who turns around and stabs us in the back.

I'm all for helping people understand "our" culture. But he was only being nice to us so he could "expose" us for his own financial gain.

Maybe that's cynical but honestly I don't care. I have seen enough good, trusting people get hosed by the media.

That's not necessarily true, although in his case, given the slant of his publications it probably is.   I wouldn't be surprised to find out he has another account that he's using to scope out this site.  It would be perfectly consistent for him to start gathering information to write a hit piece about right-leaning forums.  It would be "fair and objective" and will show them all to be hate filled racist cesspools of modern fascism.

That's how the lefty spin machine works.

I don't think its a liberal conspiracy, but rather people don't give a shit about that guy.
