WINTER PARK, Fla. –– A Maitland police sergeant was injured Friday while test-firing a handgun at a gun range, according to authorities.

Maitland police said the officer, identified only as Sgt. Fox, was struck in the face by debris at the Winter Park Gun Range on Temple Trail.

According to police, Fox, who is a firearms instructor, was test-firing a new model handgun for the Maitland Police Department when the firearm malfunctioned. The gun got stuck and did not discharge a round but some debris struck Fox in the face, police said.

Fox was wearing eye protection but suffered minor facial injuries and cuts, police said.

An officer took Fox to a hospital for an examination.
