I have about a million things to do in the next few days, and I started wondering about this.  Lets forget for a second that Im posting on Afrcom instead of getting my shit done.

Would having eight or so more hours of productivity out of each human really make a difference?

What if all the brilliant minds in the world had the other 33% of their life to spend on solving the worlds mysteries?

Would we have flying cars?

Moon colonies?

Renewable energy?

Instead of 1911 vs Glock, would we argue plasma vs phaser?

Teleporters?

How many posts would Aimless have?

discuss.

All we'd gain is an additional 8 hours on arfcom each night.

Cue the Russian sleep deprivation experiment story with the gut ripping and the skin eating and the poo flinging and the philosophical zombies...

"WHAT ARE YOU?" he demanded. "I must know!"

"Have you forgotten so easily?" The subject asked. "We are you." "We
are the madness that lurks within you all, begging to be free at every
moment in your deepest animal mind." "We are what you hide from in your
beds every night. We are what you sedate into silence and paralysis
when you go to the nocturnal haven where we cannot tread."

If we didn't need food how wealthy would we be?

If no sleep were needed, I sure as hell wouldnt spend that "gained" time at work!

Were "advancing" ourselves right into helplessness as it is...no need to hurry that any faster.

We would be at the level of intellectual of an insect.  There is a reason we sleep ya know.

Lack of sexy dreams. No thanks.

I used to wonder that too. Even though I like sleeping, it's only because we all need rest. There are times I can't help but wonder what it would be like to not require sleep.

BTW I love that Russian sleep paralysis story... Gives me chills.

I've always wondered that if sleep came about because the earth rotates, thus giving us day and night.  If it was always daylight, would there be such a thing as sleep?

Jesus christ man, it's called a hypothetical scenario, in which this need is removed. What is the point of even posting a thread if this comment is going to be your answer.

Sir, are you implying that posting in GD is a waste of time and that somehow working at a job, educating yourself to advance your intellect or volunteering to help children in need would somehow be time better speant?

I worked with a former speed user, she worked three jobs and slept once every two weeks when she was speeding. She said she made tons of money but spent it all to get a fix.

It's only our cortex that needs sleep.  I'm guessing that without the need for sleep, our brains would be more like our spinal cords.

Thread title:  If the human race did not need sleep, how advanced would we be?

While this reply is technically correct, reading comprehension is key.

I was part of an isolation experiment that lasted two weeks in a room with no clocks, windows, or contact with the outside.

By the end I was sleeping 2-3 hours every 24, and feeling quite rested.

So they didn't give you the stimulant gas?

Not surprising though, since you didn't have much to do to expend the energy, like going to work or dealing with women...

I think the biggest reason we need sleep is because of the size of our brains. Look at fkn ants, fkrs go til they die. They sleep very little

I know this Indian immigrant who only sleeps about 4 hours a day, and he does it all. Engineer, owns electrical contracting company, is a animator, organizes the Indian community in town, etc.

I only sleep about 6 hours a night, if I didn't have to sleep at all, I would only be much more caught up on books I want to read.

We'd probably have never made it past the cro-magnon man or even the neanderthal. Keep in mind that the reason why, supposedly, we got to the place on the planet we did was because of higher brain power..........................but sleep is essential for the development of that brain power.

You are essentially asking for the best of both worlds without paying the cost.
