I was watching our store and a man walked in and we stared talking. Seemed like an ok guy, I thought!!

Then out of nowhere he said that there are to many people in the world, and the world cannot sustain it. We need to lower the populations!! And control them!!
I did not say anything for a minute,
Than I asked him if he believed in global warming.

He said Yes.

I said nothing more and he left.

These people are scary

No we are in a little town in Lancaster County

My dads response was lets start with him.

I should have said something like that, but I was I little shock by the way he said it.

There are too many people where I live. 15 years ago you could zip anywhere between Denton, Dallas & Fort Worth with no problems unless it was rush hour. Now, any time during the day, it's full of 2x the cars and slow-assed drivers who don't know they are supposed to be in the left lane. Decreasing North Texas' population by 1/2 would be awesome!

The overwhelming majority of the worlds population (85%+) live within 30 miles of the coastline. There is more than enough land to sustain doubling of the worlds population. We need to stop subsidizing crops that we don't need and stop using corn for purposes other than food (ethanol). Since ethanol use was legislated, it has become a high dollar crop. Land that was used for other foods is now being used for growing non food corn products. While I don't agree with ethanol, we are still growing enough food for ourselves and other nations. If we did it right, we could support the world.

You cannot breed idiocy out of the population, you have to exterminate it.

That future world will be mighty small and lonely.

Asking if he "believed" in global warming...lol. Did you also ask him if he "bought into" that whole crazy gravity thing? The planet is getting hotter. We're releasing carbon into the atmosphere, and the greenhouse effect is very simple and provable. Now - you can debate how much of an impact humans have compared to natural causes and for sure most of the GW movement is chicken little-ism and profiteering, but acting like a question as facile as "do you believe in global warming" should always be answered "no" (or "yes") is more than a little silly.

As for population control, seems the "durr, it's yoooo-genics!" crowd has some internal inconsistency. If you spit out 7 kids you can't take care of then they either die (nobody's going to put up with that) or Uncle Sam takes care of them. So if you're against any kind of population control, and I don't mean forced sterilization, then you're for big government.

I don't know if you've noticed who's breeding the most, but it's not well educated people who raise 2-3 decent children. We should be offering sterilization as an alternate sentence for child neglect, and charging a shitload more people who can't take care of their kids with child neglect. We should give out condoms and contraceptives like candy.

Our current population growth patterns are incompatible with our standard of living.

If you want a preview of what happens in 100 years, how about we just open our borders with Mexico and let maybe 40 million of their poorest people come into our country.

I once had an Italian make a comment to me about not understanding the size of America. I told him that in the distance it would take to drive across the width of his country... we can have that far between gas stations. I don't think he really grasped that concept, either.

#2) Why would we want to?

#3) Much of the inland areas are not habitable due to climate, or there is no infrastucture. If someone wanted to live there, they would. Why would we want to develop that? Just so all the extra people can exist there? And what are they going to do to support themselves? It can go on and on. Again, just because we can doesn't mean we should. The point is that we can sustain much larger populations. Why we would want to is besides the point, really, but in the West, one of the big problems is demographic decline. While the civilized Western populations decline, the third world population booms. Our problem is not too many people, it is too few people in the advanced nations.

If you want to curb population growth, the best way to do so is bring mordern culture into the third world.

On, and the poster you quoted is right on the ethonal stuff . . .

This. Look at our country as it slides down the drain, why should the working people continue to support the welfare system? And to support the entire world? Nonsense.

That's my second point if they persist with their insanity.

Assuming that the population of the world was cut down to... what do you want? 2 Billion? Sure, let's say we hack it down to a third.

So assuming that the population of the world is now only 2 billion and all the people you know/care about are still around, what would you do differently? How would it make your life different? Less traffic congestion, I'll give you that, but qualitatively, what would be the big difference?

You'll get one of the following answers:
1) Well with less people, there will be more wealth per capita - in other words, they're greedy psycopaths masquerading as socialists. They don't really care about other people, they just want to take other people's stuff.
2) It would make the environment better because we wouldn't be "messing it up." Ask them first if they ever actually "use" the environment. Do you go camping? Fishing? Hunting? No, you don't, do you? Your Prius has air conditioning and why would you want to go do something that wasn't air conditioned? STFU. If they do actually "use the environment" then ask them what about American civilization is preventing them from enjoying it. We set aside large tracts of land specifically so that a select few people can go walk on it. Is it that they just don't want to "share" it with as many people? See item 1.
3) We'll leave a better world for our children. This one is just retarded. You can't advocate making the world better "for the children" and then advocate against having children. Stop being obtuse.
4) There will be less crime/social problems. These people are eugenicists. They don't actually want fewer people, they just want fewer of a certain kind of people. Call them a Nazi and tell them to fuck off.
5) Or they just don't really know why they want fewer people in the world. They heard from someone else and it sounded like a good idea, so they're repeating it. You should probably try to convince them to have a more informed opinion, but in reality that's not going to work so just avound them and make your life easier.

The point is that we are not facing over population. Most of the west is in demographic decline, in fact.

We shouldn't provide welfare, but what's wrong with selling food?

because those who have need of it have no money and we already hand out food staples left and right to support 3rd world nations. No, its time that we sell them better weapons and more guns instead.

I agree, overall we are reproducing at an unsustainable rate. Populations of other types of animals go through cycles as they surpass the carrying capacity of their environments. Why would we be any different? The earth can't hold an infinite number of people.

Now, as to how to deal with this problem, there I don't have too many ideas.

I was laughing out loud at your post then I got to the part in red.

Now I'm rolling on the floor .

Go get a clue.

Those laughing emoticons are a very strong argument..against basic physics. Note I didn't even say that the greenhouse effect in terms of it killing us all horribly in 20 years is provable, or that humans are necessarily strong contributors to it, though it seems pretty clear we are.

Yuk it up though. Science mocks you. Science actually mocks you more than I do - I'm somewhat on the fence. I don't buy the Al Gore Profit model of global warming, nor do I buy the nitpicky "we hate libruls so we'll ignore science" stance of the right who blows every small discrepancy out of proportion like it disproves decades of growing evidence.
