If you zero in on the center of the Barents Sea,

just above Finland. Use Google Maps Satalite View.

What has caused all those strange geometric designs

Think maybe they use sonar for that.

They do. These dots are the tracks that the ships were taking while taking readings. The wide-open areas were estimated using photogrammetry, probably.

Think maybe they need to be in the water and the area to use their sonar?

It likely has something to do with how the image was created. The other areas of ocean have more detail but I still see some of the same patterns. My swag is that the patterns are more visible in the area of the Barents because there is less detail in that area to obscure them.

Boundry lines from the imaging. Less care is taken to hide them when the area is empty.

Drag marks on the ocean floor...which begs the question...

What's big and white and drags the ocean floor? Moby's Dick

"what users are seeing is an artifact of the data collection process.

'Bathymetric (sea-floor) data is often collected from boats using sonar to take measurements of the sea-floor.

'The lines reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data.'
