PHILADELPHIA – Duong Nghe Ly can't wait to begin his senior year at South Philadelphia High School. A day of violence there last year changed his life, and he wants to learn if his school has been transformed as well.

Last Dec. 3, after years of attacks on Asian immigrant students, something finally snapped.

Fueled by rumors, a group of students roamed the halls searching for Asian victims until one was attacked in a classroom. Later, about 70 students stormed the cafeteria, where several Asians were beaten. About 35 students pushed past a police officer onto the so-called "Asian floor," but were turned back. After school, Asians being escorted home were attacked anyway by a mob of youths.

Almost all the attackers were black — but few observers believe the violence was due to racial hatred. Instead, they cite isolation of different groups within the school, certain students' warped "gangster" values, and for some, simmering resentments over perceived benefits for Asian students.

Why some Asians seem to flock to urban inner cities is beyond me. I grew up in a small town and never had to deal with shit as bad as this.

yeah makes perfect sense, they are targeted for being Asian, however that is not racist.

Liberal logic. Otherwise known as "doublespeak".

Did South Central march on the police headquarters?
No, they targeted the hard-working Asians in their community.

The current principal is the 5th in 6 years!

I especially liked the bs that "few observers" believed that the attacks were racial. What a dumb reporter. Almost of the attackers were black was written. What else was there? Asians? Whites?

Articles like this are bs and so is wording like "predominantly black".

What comes next? Cultural awareness weeks? Hootananies? Sing alongs?

I suggest that the national AP writer get permission and hang out in the hallways of the high school and then report what she directly perceives.

It can only be "racial hatred" if its being done by white kids/people.

I definitely think it's cultural.

"We owe this country a lot," Tu Ly says. "The government paid a lot of money for my wife's operation. We will work our best to contribute to society. My children can choose whatever job they like, as long as they do something to contribute to this country."

That says a lot to me. It has everything to do with culture and nothing to do with race. It seems blacks are stuck in an awful culture

Certain segments of our population are widely recognized as animals. It probably doesn't surprise people when animals act like animals.

ETA: I'm referring to cultural segments.

Shit, I thought that was the silver lining.

If society "cared" then people might roll up their sleeves and fix the problem. That would make the problem people angry.

Right, seems to me they got it pretty good. Sounds like they racially hated on a buncha asians and will get away with it.

Meh, in the big scheme of things this will be forgotten by , oh about 30 seconds from now.

Our country is in a slow spiral into hell , theres not a damn thing anybody can do about it , cause that would be "racist" so sit back and enjoy the show

See? It's just part of their culture. Not racist at all.

Attributing it to resentment is a way to avoid the issue of black racism and criminality. People who do that are trying to turn it around and make the black perps into the victims. If you are looking for someone to take responsibility for their actions in our inner cities... you will be looking for a long time.

Detroit has few Asians; they've all settled at least a couple suburbs away. The Midwest is a little different than the east and west coasts.

No accountability for the attackers. Notice how they threw in that theattackers FELT like the asians were receiving preferential treatment? Somehow then it becomes excusable. If you look carefully a lack of accountability has fucked up our government, our schools, businesses and yes some cultural groups.

Shit, my dad used to goto an inner city school in the 60s. One time as they were walking up the lawn to get to the school doors, a group of belligerent black kids were standing there. They knew right then what they were planning to do, which is kick the shit out of any of the white kids who tried to get inside. My dad and his friend ducked their hand and just plowed into the group of black kids to get inside. They were getting showered with punches and kicks, but managed to get inside. Brutal story.

I don't care what people say, there are ALOT of black racist people out there, they don't deserve anymore benefit of the doubt than anyone else.

Everyone I know who had to attend an inner-city high school has told me stories like this. My ex-wife went to East High School in Waterloo, Iowa. She told stories of the "black stairway" which no one else was allowed to use, and how they would have to walk the long way around to get up or down the stairs.

Asians get the job done and then some without complaining or operating with the idea they are entitled to everything. That's also why Asians get picked on because they tend to be obedient and quiet (stereotype).

Here is what I see

You have a group of people who are unwilling to achieve for themselves.

Than they get jealous of those who have worked hard to achieve.

I went to grad school with a Vietnamese refugee who had to go to high school in a bad ghetto school in PG County. Today she has a PhD and a good job, while her classmates are either dead, in prison, HIV-infected, or junkies. But remember: the real problem is that the public schools are underfunded.

This is Orwellian - it's not a racial issue but an issue with 'gangster' values, ignoring the fact that the 'gangster' culture has it's roots entirely in the Black community and specifically preaches contempt for White Middle Class values.
