Personaly...not a fan of radical/liberal conservation groups...such as Greenpeace or the Sea Shepards.

But I do watch Whale Wars....and really don't like the Japanese that much...historicaly known for breaking treatys...arrogant/self centered nation that it is. They be 'researching' all right....'researching' to see how many whales they can catch to circumvent international treatys!.....That...and for some odd reason I find the 'Whale Wars' show entertaining...and must have rubbed off some radical conservationist kool aid from the propaganda they spew.

Shit! Best 'reality show' on the tube...This shit being real-real...and such horse-shit as 'Pawn Stars'...'American Pickers'...'Ice Road Muther fuckers...er ah Truckers', etc just don't work for me....But I do like 'Deadliest Catch'...but not the other fishing shows.....maybe it's the ships and the sea.....maybe I'm just not interested in pawn shops, rummage sale junk dealers...and truckers....loggers....who knows...

Anyhow...I watch the show...see the Sea Shepard Society's point(at least towards whales). Probably would shoot them if the society started jacking with my Tuna..and I was a tuna fisherman. I do think they are a bunch of liberal idiots. But it does seem to me that the Sea Shepard Society are doing what the rest of the international community should be doing. I have no problems with native tribes doing a bit of whaling as they've historicaly done...but if the US cannot go a whaling by treaty....why should the Japanese be able to blatantly violate the same treaty?

Just what do the rest of the obviously intellegent...high minded...AR shootin'...liberal hatin'...Toyota truck luvin'...Greenpeace despising..arfcommers think of whaling in general...and Japanese whaling in particular

The Japanese should be eating as much long lived apex predator meat as possible. The mercury content will hasten there extinction.
Anyone else who thinks that's a good idea can join them.

who are we (you) to tell someone or group what they can eat,you say you like tuna why is it ok for you to eat
tuna but not ok for the folks who want to eat whales to do so,as long as they manage there harvest they can eat whatever

Probably because the Inuit actually need the whale meat to live, while the Japanese want to use whale parts in some magic effort to make their dicks bigger.

Either ban it or don't.

If whales are endangered ban it. Simple

I don't think that the Japanese population is going to die off if they are not allowed to continue whaling.

At least the goings on in the Antartic is keeping allot of the most radical eco-whackos occupied

There ain't many grocery stores where they live. And the ones there are up there are incredibly expensive because of how far they have to ship the stuff. They need to hunt for food.

The only way to truly prevent extinction is to make the animial worth more here than extinct. Whales eat HUGE amounts of seafood, not just krill but bait fish too. the touriat industry is not enough incentive to warrant full protection of a species requiring these resources.

Whales should be culled esecially some of the more populous species, dolphins should absolutley be culled they are thick as hell right now. I do not endorse the waste of these creatures they should be harvested in a controled commercial enviroment.
If you want to save a species farm them. Cows will never go extinct unless we do.

Shrug. Dogs aren't that smart.

I would argue they are at least as smart as whales.

There are plenty of mammals which show relatively high levels of intelligence, including problem-solving intelligence –– dogs, cats, pigs etc. In fact, mammals are the top of the heap in the animal world when it comes to brain power.

If you determine what you eat based on the creature's level of intelligence then you'll end up like a co-worker of mine, who eats only chicken and fish. I think he's being silly, but at least he's logically consistent.

ETA: For the record, I don't see the need to hunt whales either, but I also don't have any moral qualms about other people eating them. If the population can sustain it, then there's no reason not to hunt whales –– other than satisfying the western world's moral vanity.

I personally think whales are magnificent creatures, but I don't necessarily see ANY evidence that they are more intelligent than a cow or a pig.
By the same token, can we REALLY be sure how intelligent pigs are?

To me, that argument is the first step on the path to morality-driven vegetarianism and other craziness. (Not saying that's what YOU are advocating, just that it's where that type of logic can eventually lead). As long as we are not hunting them to extinction and are managing them to have viable and healthy breeding populations, I don't see what other "responsibility" we have, as the undisputed apex predator on the planet.

As an aside, I think it's also important to acknowledge that the Japanese ARE operating within the terms of the moratorium, even though the were basically lied to when they agreed to it. By the terms of the agreement, they ARE allowed to take a certain number of whales for research, so while they are abusing that part of the agreement, they are still technically in compliance (just like putting a recoil compensator on a AR15 during the 1994-2004 AWB wasn't technically a violation). Also, by the terms of the agreement, they are REQUIRED to make the best use of waste product from their "research" so using the meat for food is actually in compliance with the agreement, since it would be a violation of the agreement to just throw away the whale carcasses. So while it's clear that the Japanese ARE obviously taking advantage of and abusing specific terms of the agreement

Hell, I think birds are pretty intelligent. They're certainly social critters, and some species of birds will mourn the loss of their partner. But that doesn't stop me from hunting and eating them.
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 7:39:29 AM EDT

It's not just a whale issue. The ethics discussion is about hunting in general.

This debate exposes a paradox in liberal thinking. Libs are taught to revere nature and that mankind is an evil blight. However, as soon as man starts acting like other creatures in nature, we get in trouble.

As an apex predator species, humans need to act like one. Responsible hunting is OK. (managing proper game levels, eating the meat, killing humanely, etc,) Poaching is not OK. Neither is killing for horns or whatever and leaving the rest to rot. That's waste and irresponsible.

If we start measuring intelligence, that's a slippery slope. A pig may be smarter than my dog, and my dog is certainly smarter than Nancy Pelosi.

Link Posted: 9/6/2010 7:44:03 AM EDT
Why don't the Japs round up some whales and farm them like we do with tuna and salmon? Then they could have guaranteed siting whale watching tours as well as save fuel when they needed to 'research' one. That should make everyone happy.

If the moratorium was on endangered whales then I would support it, but not for the 'feel good' BS that the hippie crowd pushes.

I'm somewhat ignorant on this topic, what kind of actual regulation is there involving whaling? Hunting generally (at least in the US) has a season, a license, tags, permits, etc depending on the animal.

Now i do think regulation can get ridiculous, but there needs to be reasonable means of conservation for these animals. Is that happening? (Like I said, I'm ignorant on this subject). All I've heard of is "sell-imposed quotas".

Oh and at the Sea Shepherd and their crews, I'm surprise none of them have died yet with their foolishness.

I think what they're doing is stupid, but either way, they are terrible at it. I suppose if you're going to do something stupid, at least do it well.

Exactly - and that's the entire problem here.

The Japanese agreed to the moratorium because they were told that it would only last long enough for the whale populations to recover - and then when the populations had been recovered, they were basically told "ha ha, we lied to you to get you to agree - we're NEVER going to allow commercial whaling again" - and it's entirely about the hippy members of the Commission trying to impose their "we think whales are cute and might be intelligent" bullshit morality on countries like Japan and Norway.

How many of us would stick to a voluntary agreement we had entered into, once we realized the other side had lied to us all along, and had zero intention of actually honoring the terms of the agreement?

This.

The Japanese are showing incredible restraint in abiding by a silly treaty that benefits them in no way with no real repercussions for breaking it.

If the Sea Shithead sinks with all hands on board, I won't shed one bloody tear. I might even dance a little jig of grief, though.

Whales have been on the planet for millions of years. Humans are at most about a 200,000 year old species. We developed
harpoons before the whales did so I guess we win. They had more time to do it, but they DIDN'T. They just wasted their
time swimming through the oceans, eating plankton, making funny noises at each other, and generally wasting time instead
of accomplishing anything.

If we're not supposed to eat whales, why are they made out of meat?

Fuck the Sea Shitheads.
