Lets say that the violence in Mexico spirals out of control and a group of high ranking military officers back by the military launch a coup and seize power. What would be our response? Now obviously we would condemn it, but would we intervene? What do you think we would do?

I know this is not plausible and I am not saying I want it to happen. Just sitting around and thinking is all.

Honestly, that's a good question. I'd like to make a joke about a strongly worded letter, or something, but I don't know. I think it would be a general verbal condemnation or a call for elections followed by a wait and see. With this president, I think there would be a high likelihood of trying to hand it off to the next dude in office.
Link Posted: 9/5/2010 7:51:03 PM EDT
I think we would maintain our current readiness and defense posture.
Link Posted: 9/5/2010 7:51:51 PM EDT
At any given time I'm COMPLETELY confused as to what the US' policty toward Mexico really is anyways. Add to that the fact that Obama is our POTUS... and you have a guaranteed policty of doing absolutely NOTHING to Mexico if that happened. Words... that's the only salvo possible to come from the US government in such a scenario.

BTW... I'm not so sure that this scenario is a bad thing. The current mexican government seems to be completely run by the drug cartels at the present.

BS, Obango would whine about how they had subverted democratic process and that the Mexican military was impeding the logical evolution of the socialist electorate of Mexico.

He already did this when he interfered with the ouster of the guy in Honduras who wanted to be president for life in direct violation of their constitution by their military.....

We'd intervene. It'd go something like this:

We interrupt your regularly scheduled episode of American Idol for this special emergency address from the White House.

President Obama: My fellow Americans and to our brothers and sisters in Mexico, it is with a heavy heart that we watch the coup in that country unfold. I have instructed the Border Patrol and I.C.E. to allow any and all refugees who want to leave Mexico to do so. Tomorrow we will be sending in our military with Armored personel carriers to bring back as many Mexican nationals as we can find for the next month in Operation Incumbent Reelection.

After that month, I will grant amnesty to the millions of Mexican nationals here in America. We hope to be mailing out checks along with a voter registration card to each and every one of you. This in turn will create jobs with the post office and at the national mint where we will have to print more money to cash these checks. This will, of course, go on the new "saved jobs" index I created to cook the numbers on unemployment to make it look like we are in recovery.

I hope all of our new Mexican American brothers and sisters will remember where the money came from and vote for me in 2012. Good night, and Allahu Akbar.

I guess it would depend on whether the Junta was supporting the Narco-Terrorists, or not. If they seized control and went full retard on the druggies, we'd probably support it to a degree. If they sided with the narcs, then that wouldn't bode too well for us, or them.

The last part would be quite destabilizing and might warrant some sort of action on our part.

Any successful coup would likely just be the cartels tightening their grip. They are the dominant force in the country now. I can't see 'em allowing an overthrow that didn't wind up with them in even better circumstances than they are already.

We maintain intelligence operations in every country that we can, just like every other country who can do so. Israel seems to be the one that gets caught all the time, but don't kid yourselves.

So it depends on who takes over and what are their perceived intentions. Right now I'd expect the only people capable of a takeover in Mexico would be the dealers, which would be extremely bad. I think the entire world would oppose that outcome with force.
Link Posted: 9/5/2010 8:39:04 PM EDT
I imagine that we would squash the mex military and return power to the cartels.

Good point, I thought about that too. When I original thought about it I thought more along the lines of the military coming in to run out the cartels but who knows. It is probably more likely they would come in to support the cartels.

A bow and an apology, based on current track record....

First, Obama would hold a press conference blaming Bush. Then he would send in the lawyers. Then he would go on vacation for 2 weeks.

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 1 or 2 Xbox 360/PS3.

If you have a PC, get the PC versions. Much better. The console versions are essentially Gears of War with modern guns.

The PC version requires some thought. When I can't go shooting, I go to my virtual range:

And when I saw this thread, I thought of these games.

This.

Unless of course the coup was by communist elements of the military, in which case the US gov would also send goodies to Mexico as well.

Send a Yale graduated former oil exec, to negotiate a deal with the new leaders that subsidizes their oppression of the Mexican citizens and maximizes profits for any international corporate entity wanting to do business in Mexico.

Depends on who is doing the coup.

If a Hugo Chavez wannabe seized power on the promise of doing away with Mexican drug cartels, I'm sure the current U.S. administration would do everything it could to accommodate him.

Depends on who they're backed by...

We have invaded Mexico in the past, due to similar situations...

OTOH, if the coup is beneficial to our interests (eg, they stand a decent chance of doing some damage to the cartels) then the US might do 'nothing'...
