Why do people who are usually normal act like savages when they go into the mountains? Shoot holes in everything, this is the wilderness, that's what its for!
Sign says no campfires? Too bad! Lets rip out all the vegatation and build a bonfire in front of the sign. If you run out of fuel just rip out the sign and burn that too.
"Dogs must be leashed" is just a suggestion, like that sign that says "Toilet". I love it when your fucking dog comes charging up the trail barking at me. Is he gonna bite me, hump me, or just punch his snout into my crotch? No wonder cops shoot so many charging dogs.
And why does everybody you pass on a forest road wave at you? The same smiling jerkoffs waving at everyone they pass would cut you off and give you the finger if it was a Walmart parking lot.

Maybe hiking isn't the tension reliever you need?

I just finished the 3rd week of a probable 5 week survey in a national forest. There was a lot of trash at all the camp sites, garbage dumps, shot up signs, etc. Some people are absolute savages.

I did see some evidence of campers having cleaned up sites before they left, including trash that prior shitheads left behind.

An Idaho Fish and Game buddy of mine said the easiest way to stop people from shooting up signs is to put an American Flag sticker on them.

Lemme tell ya, that shit works!

Snoqualmie NF is the worst because of easy access from the city. Olympic NF isn't as bad, but you can really see the difference when you go into Olympic National Park. Its much cleaner and visitors act civilized. Of course they still don't know how to drive on mountain roads or bring water with them when they go hiking, but hey you can't expect too much from them.
Link Posted: 9/4/2010 10:12:15 AM EDT
I guess its the same mentality that thinks its OK to go camping and bring every noise making device you can cram into your vehicle.
Why do people want to "get away from it all" but bring a god damned boombox and proceed to get drunk, blast it at 2 AM and chop up, then burn everything in sight?
I hate people sometimes.
Link Posted: 9/4/2010 10:17:40 AM EDT
You just need to go a bit further in the woods... Calculate how far the average fat ass can drag a Coleman cooler full of beer and then add 1/4 mile to that to account from drunk roaming - then make camp.

Now if your wondering just how you'll get YOUR cooler that far...

This X Eleventy billion I think some people forget their mother is not walking behind them to clean things up....

Because there's an unspoken code when you're in the middle of nowhere. If you're in trouble, they'll stop and help, if they're in trouble, you should stop. When you're in the places ambulances and AAA can't get to, you've got to rely on the kindness of other people and its best to remain friendly. If you can't handle that, stay in the damn city.

But I'm with you on the way people treat our national parks and forests. Its disgraceful.

It;s like that around here also.

I'd like to think it's more an age thing but I'm probably wrong.

Because for some people, getting away from it all means getting away from neighbors that complain about that sort of thing. It's a big forest, if you don't like your camping neighbors, go somewhere else.

I'm teaching my boys that you leave a campsite cleaner than you found it.
"But dad, WE dident throw that trash there!"

"Dosent matter, we used the campsite, that trash dosent belong in the campsite, we pick it up. If YOU dont like it, YOU dont get to come next time"

I think you forget that just because its NF doesn't mean that people don't live there, good people and bad ones. Some of which may not like the tourism.

The same type of idiots that feel the need to spray paint on rocks and trees in the forest.

Unfortunately there is a certain class of shooters that are the worst offenders. Nothing like dragging an old refrigerator, computer and load of trash out to public lands to shoot. And then leave it all behind.
Link Posted: 9/4/2010 11:20:04 AM EDT
Down here all of the signs out in the country have bullet holes, I kinda like it. Also most people outside the cities wave when they pass each other especially if it's two trucks passing. It's like a secret handshake and lets us easily spot yankees and other foreigners..

That's a PERFECT camp fire ring. I woulda never thought of using a truck rim. I've got a few of those laying around due to my "profession".

Get off the road to avoid the jack offs and their garbage. IIRC, the Clinton era closed 900 miles of roads in the Gifford Pinchot NF. This cut back access for the drunks. They tend to pool near roads. Dispersed camping is where it's at for peace and quiet.
Link Posted: 9/4/2010 11:36:04 AM EDT
Some places are better then others. I've never seen anything like that crap in the White mountain national forest in NH. But then again, the mountaineering clubs in that area, the A.M.C. in particular, work nonstop to keep the place in top shape. It shows. The Huts they run have nicer accommodations (and way better staff) then your typical motel.

I suppose the whole forest being rugged mountains with horrendous weather keeps the fatbodies out, and the trash down, as well.

LOL! I had 2-22 inchers in my yard sale last month marked "Camp fire rings-$1"
I couldn't hardly give them away. 1 did sell finally.

This is why I backpack and camp off the trail. I'd rather stay home than head out to the public campgrounds. Dogs barking all night, generators and A/C units running, kids screaming, car doors slamming. Screw that.

I never realized how bad it was until I started backpacking. Went and stayed at a campground with some family and couldn't stand it. Way too noisy, and I hate hearing some kid in the next site crying and screaming all night long.

You would think the easiest way to stop people from shooting signs and shooting in prohibited areas would be HAVE MORE OPEN SHOOTING AREAS.

I'm surrounded by national forrests but there are only two legal shooting spots and they both are at least a two hour drive away. So nobody should be surprised when people shoot in the first secluded spot they can find, using whatever is available for targets then bug out before the rangers can show up.

Ours isn't really a wave, it's just one finger. Which finger you get is dependent on how well you're liked.

Sveral times I have asked the rangers in the Chattahoochee national forest in north GA about shooting in the NF, and each time they have said target shooting is legal in the NF. I have been out on a weekend camping trip with several friends and we shot a lot. No we didn't trash the place or cause any problems but we also never had any rangers show up.

However target shooting must have a solid backstop and cannot take place on wma lands.

Just got back from another week of survey. We saw more garbage. We saw a group of campers near a washed out road and bridge, they left a pile of shotshells and .223 brass plus plastic bags, beer and pop cans and bottles, and various other garbage- shitheads.

run over the deer on the highway with your pick up during hunting season.

save ammo for road signs.

the shot up signs, are usually surrounded by pabst blue ribbon cans.

Go to dry county and you will see a little less of it , beer and the lack of supervision =s asshattery . My fiancee thinks state park campgrounds are quiet

I honestly have only had real problems a couple of times in car campgrounds and fter talking with the ppl it quieted down.
Link Posted: 9/11/2010 12:51:35 PM EDT
"Some peoples kids." My dad used to say that all the time. I never really knew what he was talking about because when I would ask him what he meant. He would just say "You'll know what I mean when you get a little older." He never said it about kids, it was always older teens to adults he meant it about.

As I go older I realized it meant, if someone's parents didn't teach them how to behave then they would act like asshats. You know when you see the dude walking around with his pants at his knees being dragged down the street by his pitbull, with his hat on sideways and his shirt off? Next time you see him just say to yourself "Some peoples kids..."

It also works for the retards that let their dogs sit in their laps while driving.

Okay back to the point. People get in the woods and think they are their own boss. If no one tells them they can't they will do. They know it's wrong to but they either don't think about it or don't care. It's generally they don't even realize what they are doing is dumb/bad/illegal.

The scary thing to me is seeing the signs on the inside of a corner with bullet holes in it. Imagine coming down a road and having a bullet fly into the cab of your truck. I'll tell you right now I'm returning fire, you retard.

Because they have no respect for others.
Link Posted: 9/12/2010 6:29:09 PM EDT
Why?

Why can't there be an unsupervised range in your favorite National Forest?
Use "No Shooting" signs a as targets.

Make the shooting range a transfer station, so people can bring in refrigerators, TV's, cars, steel beams, dump them and then shoot them.
At the end of the day separate the trash from the recyclables and haul it off.

Make the campsites on big slabs of concrete, cover with a thin layer of dirt, when the shitheads break camp and leave their trash a dozer can come in and push all the trash and crap into the transfer station.

Nothing has changed over the years, have you ever gone way out into the boonies and found abandoned mining camps / claims, old dump sites, old cars / equipment?
