seems like there are alot more people using the excuse of dis-ability to get benefits now than ever?

stuff like BI - POLAR years ago that would have been considered retarded

drug addicts get dis-ability

obese people get dis-ability

seems like there is a dis-ability for everything?

was it like this 50 years ago? why so much dis-ability now compared to before?

I'd say a good portion of these "disabilities" cropping up are due to the advancement of science. Whether they're all legit or not...well that's up for you to decide

I know someone that gets SSI disability for being a rage filled asshole. He worked at a golden coral for two weeks, his boss asked him to do something so he knocked him the fuck out

Now he sits and drinks whiskey all day and smokes pot while collecting from the government. Yay.

Most disability is just another form of welfare.  Just another group of parasites.  There are some people that are genuinely disabled but more just want free shit from us taxpayers.  Case in point: A friend of a friend in Oregon.  16 year old kid –– no social skills and maybe a little slow.  His mom had him declared disabled so she can get a nice check every month.  She is on disability too.  Sure beats working for minimum wage.

I'd say that we're considering more and more problems to be "disabilities".  It's a great way to get more people on the dole and on board with redistribution, if only in a "you can't cut my disability checks!" kind of way.

take your pick

modern medicine (more people survive what was once life threatening)
civilization (darwinism no longer applies)
drug companies pushing pills (over medication, poor diagnosis)
socialism (why work when I can get it from .gov?)
poor education
poor parenting

the list goes on...

Yes, but no longer for Social Security. It used to be, people with a high BMI got checks just for being obese. Now you need a comorbidity.

Alot of people confuse dis-ability with un-ability.

Disabled people physically can't do things, and I have no problem with helping them out to get to a place where they can help themselves.
Unabled people mentally can't do things, and I have a problem with helping them.

Enablement society  has made it A-okay to use any manner of thing as a crutch for why you have been unable to do something. "Oh i don't want to get a job, my doctor says I'm unable to do that.". Fuck you.

Please note though grammmatically incorrect, the UN-ability term is being used for narrative cohesion as well as a subtle dig at the UN and similar organizations which try and push such bullshit.

You need a lawyer. Almost everyone gets turned down the first time they apply. And most people who get turned down never reapply. It usually takes two years and a lawyer to get disability. If they appoved everyone, everyone would be on it.

I hate to admit it but my 30 year old sister just went on disability for depression and fibromyalgia. Funny thing, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia about 6 years ago and have maybe missed 2 days of work since. Yeah it sucks but thats life, get over yourself and move on. Last time I spoke to her I asked if I  was paying enough taxes to satisfy her, needless to say we haven't spoken since. Oh well, back to work for me, gotta support my sister.

Everyone I know must have lawyers then.

I work in healthcare - I see every day:
*  people who are gaming the system and fabricating disabilities (whether psychological or physical).
*  people who are borderline disabled but really still functional: instead of finding work they can do, they choose to do no work at all.
*  people who are borderline disabled, but TOLD they are so disadvantaged/whatever by the system that they have learned to act disabled.
*  people who are legitimately disabled and receive support through the state.

I have in-laws - I see monthly:
*  a 25 year old muscular man who does not work:  he can't hold a job because of his ego, his attitude, his temper, his borderline psychosis - all of which was not helped by his 5 year stint in prison for robbing a bank.
*  the above male has two children on welfare; and his baby-momma has two more children - all five of them are on welfare/SSI/disability from the state.   the Baby-momma lives in a trailer park:  all of her friends and relatives do the same.   It's a lifestyle that they are VERY good at sustaining.   They brag about it and change custody of children to maximize their "returns."
*  a 21 year old woman who does not work:  she constantly abuses alcohol, drugs, and her family.   She also has two children (by two different convicts) and does not have any borderline psychosis:  she just resents her family and upbringing to the point of being as much of a drain as possible on them and the state.   Both her, one child, and both baby daddies are either currently in prison or on parole, claiming SSI/welfare/disability and are perversely enabled by family and the state who try to "help them."
*  One of her children was adopted by relatives and will grow up to be a fully functioning member of society.
*  The third sibling (all three shared the same parents and upbringing - parents are together as of this day) is a fully successful graduate medical professional and responsible in every sense.

In no situation can I tell any of these people to "suck it up" or "get a job" without being politically incorrect, offending them, losing my job and or getting into a fist-fight with extended family.   The "village" has burned down; and has been replaced with mail-order welfare.

Welcome to the next generation.

I see people all the time in the ER who will give me the story (whether I care to hear it or not) of their financial woes and how they came to be in the ER that day. After explaining their current dire financial straits, they often follow it up with something like this:  "I'm working on gettin MY disability, though.", "It's gonna get better once I start getting MY disability.", or the best, "Can you fill out this disability paperwork for me?"

There are a number of reasons that I won't fill out disability papers if asked. I usually try and be as polite about it as possible, but often the same people who think that it's appropriate to go into an ER and ask an ER doc they've never met before to fill out paperwork declaring that the patient is permanently disabled, are not the most rational people in the first place. In addition to being too busy to stop and fill paperwork out, not being the patient's regular doctor, etc. MOST of these people have no disability that I can see that would prevent them from working!

I'm usually busy and see this so often that I usually don't even address the whole Gettin MY Disability issue. However, one time I did ask a woman what she was trying to get on HER disability for.

Patient: I'm workin on gettin MY disability.
Me: Really? What for?
Patient: I get boils.
Me: Boils like an abscess?
Patient: Yeah, I get em sometimes.
Me: You have abscesses so often that it makes you disabled?
Patient: Yeah, I done had like six of em!
Me: OK (dropped the issue after that)

SSI disability is much more difficult to obtain than VA disability. My father had many problems, (polio, injured back, etc.) and had to file multiple times to finally get it. He worked his whole adult life with Polio, but once his back got jacked up, he couldn't do it any longer. He tried, but it didn't last.

I don't think the negative vibes in this thread are directed toward anyone who is either legitimately disabled or who wants to work and cannot find someone to hire them because of a condition or medication.

The loathing is directed toward those with trivial or nonexistent medical problems who simply do not want to work. Believe me they are out there.

I'm aware of it, and I pay out a pretty good chunk of money quarterly to make sure if I ever become disabled I'll be guaranteed some income. Not as good as continuing to work, but a lot better than nothing. I doubt anyone has a problem with private disability insurance. Hell, I bet most don't have a problem with .gov disability for the truly disabled (I don't.) The problem is people who have never paid into the system, have no discernible disability, but somehow still manage to get on the dole.

You will be totally fucked out of your "disability insurance" after two years. You will receive "short term disability" for a period of a few weeks. Then "long term disability" for a period of two years. After that they will send you to a rehab place where you will be examined by someone who is NOT a doctor who will determine you are not permanently disabled and stop all payments regardless of your illness/condition. Meanwhile you are totally fucked. This is so widespread as standard procedure, the large insurance companies have been sued and they lost.

In addition, if your mortgage was sold to another lender, or you have refinanced, make sure you still have disability insurance on the mortgage. The new lender will totally fuck you out of it when the time comes that you need it by saying you never had it.

Do NOT count on private disability insurance. If you are truly diabled, get an attorney who specializes in Social Security disabliity and get started as soon as you can. It takes an average of two years minimum to be approved. Without an attorney, and unless you are dying, you will be turned down.

And to everybody else, not everybody who is on disability is a leech. Some people may not look outwardly physically disabled but are living with pain that would cause most to commit suicide. Be careful when painting with your broad brushes. Or you talk big til you find out you have some kind of instant onset long term uncurable painful disease. You'll have a little more compassion after you go through the can't work, where's the money gonna come from, oh shit we're gonna lose our house, our lights are gonna get cut off, already sold all the guns and still can't afford groceries for the kids, etc...

Cant speak for anyone else but I am aware of it. I have a payment withheld from my check every two weeks to Hartford for my policy. If I am disabled I would collect 66% of my salary adjusted for inflation until I turn 65.

Not only are they out there, but my experiance tells me they vastly outnumber the legitamate disabled. I know of three "disabled" people who go out to find under the table work. One suffers from PTSS because they missed a plane at the airport.

They actually got a shrink to go along with this!! Her husband is disabled as well, because of alcoholism. He actually doesn't drink at the moment and does electrical stuff under the table, he was an electrican for years. They have an "open" marriage and some women lives with them that actuallly does work part time.

The more shrinks of this type a community has, the more "dissabled" people there are in that community.
