Illinois Hunters and Sportsmen to Stage Protest Against Gun
Control Proposal
To: State Desk

CHICAGO, April 8 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released
today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):

In response to what is being billed as a preview of life under
Governor Blagojevich, the ISRA is advising hunters and sportsmen to
register their opposition to a gun control proposal scheduled to
come before the Des Plaines City Council on April 15th.

Under that proposal, Des Plaines residents would be required to
surrender many of their lawfully owned firearms to the police or
face jail time. Furthermore, Des Plaines residents would be
prohibited from purchasing or possessing many popular calibers of
sporting and hunting ammunition. Another provision would post the
names and addresses of Des Plaines gun owners, along with an
inventory of their guns, to an Internet-style database. The courts
would not regulate access to that database, thus leaving it readily
available to a wide variety of people - including gang-affiliated
employees of the Chicago Police Department.

City council member Don Smith is sponsoring the proposed Des
Plaines gun control ordinance. Smith, an ally of Chicago mayor
Richie Daley, is championing the proposal in support of Daley's
attempt to establish a 100-mile zone around Chicago where civilians
are prohibited from owning firearms. Smith introduced a similar
ordinance several years ago, but saw his proposal die in committ

That 100 mile "zone" would have to cross a patch of sand somewhere along the way! [sniper]

I don't get it...

Did you mean because it's easier to dig shallow, unmarked graves in sand?

Ken, as I said to a very earnest and well meaning lady at a Million Mom March demonstration:

Anyone who says "It can't happen here" is whistling past the graveyard of history.

Wouldn't that 100 mile zone extend into indiana??

Yes it would, and it would cover me.  There is no way in hell that those fvck-ups in Chicago will ever get any of that shit to fly here, ever.

If this is intended to stop crime in Chicago I don't understand the logic.  Are people from rural IL commuting to the city to commit crimes?

I would think that stiffer penalties for criminals that use a gun would make more sense.

Which weapons do they want to remove from the 100 mile area?

If for some messed up reason it happened, I wonder if anyone would really do anything about it.  Is there really a "line in the sand" for many?  I do not believe so. Maybe I am just in a negative mood.  I think most people in their minds have too much to lose (aka = material posessions) to put their foot down.
