Skip to 1:55. I googled the plane, it's tiny. I bet the landing didn't feel good.

Cool video, but how many times do the wings fall off those things that parachutes for the plane are a standard feature?

Wow! At first I thought the chute was for the pilot and got tangled. I guess the chute was for the plane.

Parachutes are required when carrying non-crewmembers and doing more than a 30 degree pitch or 60 degree bank. But it's pretty much universal that acrobatic pilots wear chutes, their accredating agencies may require them.

The front wing fell off.

Wow, he accidentally the whole wing!

Hey, here's an idea. Lets put a parachute on a plane so when it hits the ground and burst into flames, the wind can catch it and drag a fireball all over the place.

Wow, amazing you are. Please research ballistic parachutes before coming to that absurd conclusion

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm..................plow into ground head first and die or live through a wing falling off my plane and start a grass fire? I"ll take grass fire for the win every time.

Would you prefer slamming vertically into the ground at 200kts Mr Wizard?

In retrospect, the parachute was a fairly good idea.

Thats what I was thinking, looked like it was gonna turn into a scene out of the Simpsons where all sorts of catastrophies start chain reacting.

But the pilot won't mind because he'll be dead from the impact at hitting from such high speed. Too bad the plane didn't have a parachute to slow it down to a survivable impact.

Oh, wait...

Looked like the chute was very close to becoming tangled in the parts the plane was shedding.

Never mind watched it again. That chute worked great.

Unlike Hollywood, where even a fender-bender causes a car to explode like it's packed with TNT, in real life it takes far more to actually start a fire....

Once the chute is popped, the pilot has plenty of time to shut off fuel valves & sources of ignition (master power switch is there for a reason)....

It's very likely that there will be no fireball.

That said, in this case, it seems like the fuel foreward of the shut-off caught fire... Glass-bowl fuel-water separator breaking? Fuel line rupture? Source of ignition likely would be the exhaust.....

Still, not a hollywood fireball...

And the BRS-type parachute is much safer for the occupant of the plane, than the 'bail out' variety, so long as the plane is not on fire - parachuting is a very good way to injure your legs/back if done 'wrong', and this way the (already damaged) aircraft takes the impact, not your body... It also makes situations where you cannot get yourself out of the plane to bail out 'survivable', and has a much wider operating envelope (eg, can save you from more types of crashes)

Only broke one suspension line.

Ballistic recovery systems have been used several times with success on light aircraft. Here's a vid from inside the cockpit during a different incident.

I wonder if the chute auto-deploys or is pilot activated?

Pilot (or co-pilot) activated. I don't think any of these BRS systems are set up to auto-deploy at this time. Too many factors to account for. For now, somebody's got to pull the handle or it's not going to deploy.

Pilot operated.

How the fuck would a chute know?

You know...just use the auto-pilot smurfs. They're not that busy. They can take over chute deployment duties no problem.

This one happened in Plainveiw, Tx, back in the early '80's. The pilot's wife was on the microphone at the time. A local newschick had ridden with him that day, and was ver visibly shaken when giving the news report. I live about 60 mi. north, and remember this on T.V.

I bet he woulda loved a ballistic chute.

OOOOPS

I have witnessed 6 airplanes impact the ground unintentionally. In only one of those instances would a chute like that have made any difference in survivability. Great idea, but of limited application.

One of the incidents involved a wing seperation, but at 450+mph I think the chute would have just ripped loose, but maybe not. It would have been nice to find out.

WOW!

There was a training incident while I was stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage where a pilot shot his wing man with a live AIM 9L. Luckily the pilot of the damaged plane was a Viet Nam Vet with lots of experience, and his last second evasive maneuver caused the heat seeking missile to detonate a few feet from the plane instead of inside an engine.

The damage wasn't as bad as the Israeli plane in the video, but it wasn't very far from it. That plane made it home and landed safely too. The F15 is one tough bird!
