I was trying to search the archives for any comments within the GD. I must be doing something wrong since my search does not bring back any results.

Yes. Huge thread. And no I wasn't here then.
ETA: the archives may not go back that far. |

I joined in September 01. Coincidentally I was building my first AR that month.
I been around long enough to remember the likes of McUzi, Imbroglio and Arock (although I was not involved in any of the threads that got them the banhammer), and others like Eric The Hun. I just kicked myself for never getting up to the Hun Farm before he passed. I did get to meet him one time when we went up to DFW for a fun show - we took DVDTracker up there after he defected from Kalifornistan. Wayne was a great guy, friendly and happy all the time, always willing to help a friend out. Anyway... |

I watched the Pentagon burn while listening to reports of terrorist bombs going off all over the city.

The main thread (lordtrader's, IIRC) was pretty much a minute by minute account...

I am fairly certain that block of time was lost during one of the many upgrades. That's why the archives won't take you back that far. Perhaps the content still lives on a cob webbed hard drive sitting in a dark corner somewhere - perhaps not. LT's 9-11 attack thread was bumped at the one year mark in 2002. That's when I read it. LT pegged OBL as the one responsible right away. I was impressed. Unfortunately, the thread wasn't locked and people started posting to it for numerous pages.

Oh yea. Also, i believe the page limit was 40 or so. There were numerous threads.

I think it was 1997 or 1998, there wasn't much on the site, but I used the schematics on the site to complete my first AR build. A buddy lend me a video (VHS) and it was so confusing, I got pissed, went online and grabbed the drawing to finish it.

Yep , I was here . My Father-in-law was on his way to the pentagon that morning, my dad was at the State Dept. , my sister was working there too , one of my brother-in-laws was a DC cop, other brother-in-law working in DC at Dept. of Interior . I work right next to Dulles in the flightpath
Pretty stressful until everyone got home |

Sure was. Best source of info & support in that first couple of hours, too.

Yes, there was a huge thread, people that were at the various sites, etc.

I've been a member here since 1999.
On 9/11 I didn't once think about logging on and surfing AR15.com...or the internet as a whole, either. Of course, back then I was on dial-up and didn't view the internet as a tool for gathering news like I do now. |

Man do I remember that morning/day/weeks. I was driving home from work and was listening to Imus when they started talking about a plane had maybe hit the tower. Got home and put on the TV, then watched as the 2nd plane hit.
I woke up the wife and she went off to work. She was the night shift security supervisor at the Federal installation I work at. Man what a nightmare that was. MP5s at the gate and everybody and car searched. The strangest thing? Being under the main flyway from NY airports we will sit out and watch planes go over. No planes at all for several days. |
|
I could have sworn that someone had saved the thread and posted it on one of the anniversaries.

Getting ready to walk across the street to Farnsworth Range.... RLTW Spent the next three nights at Lawson Army Airfield....

I stayed on this site all that day. Flipped back and forth between here, the 9-11 Fark thread, news outlets, and the TV, but this site seemed to have the consistently best info.

Do you believe in miracles?
After seeing this thread this morning (and an IM about it) I decided to give it another go and search for an uncorrupted backup of the site from 2002. (I had already looked at everything from 2003 on, but in 2002 we had a server failure which caused a loss of data due to corruption of the DB files.) You must keep in mind that while I am anal, I'm not THAT anal to save an orderly backup train back 8 years. To make a long story short, I went through more hard drives than you can imagine, tried to restore 8 different versions from 2003-2007 all of which had the exact same hole. (I started in 2007, so dont yell at me for checking so many, I worked my way back!) Finally I came across a lone backup (full backup) from the end of 2002. That backup contained not only this thread's missing data, but roughly 1 million replies, half of which had been lost! All of this is now in the archives and will correct any issues with missing posts/pages from archived threads pre-2003. This includes the 9/11 thread ( click me!!!! ) as well as the very first threads posted on arfcom back in November of 2000. For those who were here back then, this may be bring back memories... "Wee, I'm here. Are YOU?" It's been a VERY long day. I hope you guys get the enjoyment from seeing old threads as much as I do. The 9/11 thread was too important to lose, and I'm glad it's back and safe for good. |
|
Definately appreciate it, Goatboy.
Personally, I was on the MSN Gaming Zone when the first plane hit...there is a transcript somewhere on the web.\ I was also on a gaming forum at the time...it was phpBB, and we ended up having 2 forums dedicated to the events and the aftermath...I dont know what happened, but the forum more or less died a few weeks later....went form almost 10,000 members to about 200 active ones...was a real shame. |

And after so many requests asking for the thread to be tacked, then came the endless new threads asking 'Why has Arfkom tacked the 9/11 thread?' |
|
Epic thread, for certain. At times, it was more up to date that the MSM. Well, that isn't surprising.
|
|
I remember almost getting into a fist fight at school that day for some douche that complained "My mom was on one of those flights, I have to go home."
Truth was his mom dropped him off that morning at school, and he was going home to smoke pot. I wasn't even a lurker, I was new to the whole gun forums and was over at SKSboards I think just getting into the gun scene on a large scale. |
|
Reading that thread I just wish I could go back in time and warn everyone. It's like I'm the only one who knows what went on, freaky shit.
|
|
I was on here at the time. I just had my cable modem installed too. Thinking back I was such a kid at the time. 35 now.
Chilling to read again. It gets my BP up. It too is sad to see where we are now. Thanks GB. That thread might be a small window of history to most, but it is our window and means a lot to us. |
