about being attacked my Islamic Fundamentalist from Afghanistan. We all know we helped them fight the Russians, etc. etc.
But how many happened to remember or think about the 1980 Olympic Boycott? We harmed the careers of American Olympic athletes by withdrawing from the competition in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
Because we cared so much about them aholes. Canada, Japan, China and West Germany also joined in boycotting the Summer Games. No other country boycotted the Olympics that year or followed up with so much direct aid, military and otherwise. Conspicuously absent were boycotts by Israel and many arab countries.
And how did they thank us?

1996 killing of 19 US soldiers in Saudi Arabia

When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in December of 1979, President Jimmy Carter accused Moscow of "aggressive actions." The Soviet Union claimed that their troops were responding to requests for aid from a friendly government. Babrek Karmal, then placed inoffice as the new head of Afghanistan, seems to have reached power with the help of the Soviet Army. The reasons usually advanced for the invasion, according to David B. Kanin, were Soviet concern for the stability of their Moslem population, Soviet interest in the oil rich Persian Gulf, and their concern to maintain Communist rulers once they reached power.
The threat of an Olympic boycott first appeared in a television speech given by President Carter on January 4, 1980. It is doubtful, says Kanin, that the Soviets thought Carter would actually boycott the Olympics. But when the Soviet Union did not meet his February 20 deadline for withdrawal from Afghanistan, the president implemented his threat. Said one administration official, "Obviously, if Soviet tanks are still rolling through the streets of Kabul, there's not going to be an Olympic atmosphere."
God, I really don't like these people...
