about being attacked my Islamic Fundamentalist from Afghanistan. We all know we helped them fight the Russians, etc. etc.

But how many happened to remember or think about the 1980 Olympic Boycott? We harmed the careers of American Olympic athletes by withdrawing from the competition in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Because we cared so much about them aholes. Canada, Japan, China and West Germany also joined in boycotting the Summer Games. No other country boycotted the Olympics that year or followed up with so much direct aid, military and otherwise. Conspicuously absent were boycotts by Israel and many arab countries.

And how did they thank us?

1984 bombing of the Marines barracks in Beirut
1993 World Trade Center bombing
1996 killing of 19 US soldiers in Saudi Arabia
1998 Nairobi and Dar es Salaam bombing of US Embassies
2000 Attack on USS Cole in Yemen
2001 attack on World Trade Center and Pentagon

When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in December of 1979, President Jimmy Carter accused Moscow of "aggressive actions." The Soviet Union claimed that their troops were responding to requests for aid from a friendly government. Babrek Karmal, then placed inoffice as the new head of Afghanistan, seems to have reached power with the help of the Soviet Army. The reasons usually advanced for the invasion, according to David B. Kanin, were Soviet concern for the stability of their Moslem population, Soviet interest in the oil rich Persian Gulf, and their concern to maintain Communist rulers once they reached power.

The threat of an Olympic boycott first appeared in a television speech given by President Carter on January 4, 1980. It is doubtful, says Kanin, that the Soviets thought Carter would actually boycott the Olympics. But when the Soviet Union did not meet his February 20 deadline for withdrawal from Afghanistan, the president implemented his threat. Said one administration official, "Obviously, if Soviet tanks are still rolling through the streets of Kabul, there's not going to be an Olympic atmosphere."

God, I really don't like these people...

Throughout our U.S. history, many people have thanked us the same way.
What's up with that?

NO SHIT...

Helped France
Helped Israel
Helped Iran
Helped Iraq
Helped Afghanistan

Whoever we are currently giving aid to right now will probably hose us at some future date, I say we neutralize them right now while they are weak.

Imagine what those billions of dollars in foreign aid that was wasted on all those dumps would have done for the US economy! Imagine all that money putting cops on the streets, imagine increased funding for education, imagine the thousands of benefits you could have had, but instead it brought death, turmoil, and a waste of time.

The only real friends of the USA are fighting in afghanistan along side the USA. Fuck the rest of the world.

Just ain't true. We didn't have to help:

Israel
Iran
Iraq
Afghanistan

and their shitty stupid wars would have stayed right there. You can add Somalia to that list too. Regretably we probably did have to help France to fight the Germans. But we did help Afghanistan, and they still found their way HERE. So your argument is really not working.

I don't believe our goal in aiding Afghanistan in their fight against the Soviets was so much to help the Afghans as it was to humiliate the Soviets. Not that I have any sympathy for the Afghan people and their support or at least toleration of terror is simply inexcusible and must be punished, but I think we were just using them to achieve other goals against the Soviets.

Of course that was the situation. We were giving them payback for Vietnam. They aided the NVA and made a crappy war worse, we paid them back in Afghanistan.

But the original point of my thread is we boycotted the 1980 Olympic on behalf of the Afghan people and they hosed us. We didn't have to, and in hindsight, should not have made that gesture.

Once again, I don't believe we did it so much on behalf of the Afghan people as we did to put the Soviet invasion in the spotlight and embarrass the Soviets.

What pissed me off about the boycott was Jimmy Carter announcing the boycott without consulting anyone and then going to ask the athletes not to attend the Olympics. He basically overstepped the bounds of his authority.

Yes, imagine those billions of dollars.....

Cops on the street? We got meth labs running full tilt in my neck of the woods, & all the cops are running JBT "roadside safety checks"-AKA police state military chackpoints- so they can raise "revenue" via seat belt tickets!!! We got more cops than we need, says I.

Increased funding for education? What a crock of shit!! Private schools in the U.S. routinely spend less per pupil than public schools, thats why people are fleeing them in droves to get back into the Public School System, right?

Thousands of benefits, right? Spoken like a true socialist. How letting me keep my hard earned thousands in my own damn pocket. Despite conventional wisdom, Ted Kennedy does not know how to spend my money better than me.
