I am thinking of buying one. It's a 96 with 73xxx miles on it. I am going to look at it on Wednesday. What should I look at anything that needs special attention?

Consumer reports rates it one of the most reliable cars made. My dad's has 120000 miles on it, and it drives like it is brand new. My wifes has 65000 miles on it and will go 150000 more. The engine is supreme. The BEST bang for the buck car made. Almost as good as my BMW 528i You really CAN'T go wrong buying one that is mechanically sound. Enjoy WL

I've seen mostly good things about Nissan's reliability. Can't say much about the ones made in '96 but I'm driving a 1990 Infiniti (Nissan luxo dept.) Q45 and it's still running pretty good. And the CR report on 2001 model year cars said they're tied with Honda for second most trouble-free cars, right behind Toyota.

OK, first before you buy any used car, GET A COMPRESSION AND LEAK DOWN TEST DONE. This will tell you the condition of the internals of the engine. Inspect the fluids (look at them to see if they are clean) CHECK FOR ANY OIL LEAKS. Also run a car fax. I owned a 95 Maxima SE for 75,000 miles, NOT ONE PROBLEM. I sold that and bought a 91 Nissan 300ZX at 72,000 miles. I now have 120,000 miles on it and it's running great for an 11 year old car. So far only changed clutch and timing belt. My Z drives almost like new (not kidding), I will put it against any 11 year old car with the same miles (or less) for quality and reliability. The engine in the 96 is rated at about 190Hp for a 3,000lb car. They will get up an go and have really nice base features (power everything). They have a timing chain, so no timing belt to change. If it is a good deal and the test check out ok, I would recommend the car to you. Good Luck!

Great cars – and, even greater engines! I think the only major problem you might find is with the oxygen sensor. Check out the price of the part and labor and deduct it from the asking price. If you can get away with it, you'll have a bargain. SE model is probably the best (trans and suspension)

Its a GLE model they are asking $9,900 for it. Thanks for the info.

I'm a tech at a Nissan dealer. Been a Nissan specialist for 12 years now. The A32 Maximas, 95 on, have been our most trouble vehicles. Bar none. Oil leaks, engine problems, manual trans problems are almost non existent. Auto trans problems are rare, but expensive when they happen. The engines are awesome and run forever if the oil and filter is changed regularly. Most O2 sensor problems should have been delt with by service campaigns. The most common problem seems to be antenna mast getting bent in a car wash. When ever you buy a used vehicle it is always a good idea to get it thoroughly checked out. Give it a good road test. Full throttle acceleration to check for trans slippage during the up shift. And like Glockrules said, take a look at the fluid color (coolant, AT, PS, brake) for serious discoloration or contamination.

Owned a '91 SE a few moons ago. Best car out of the three so far, hands down. Spry and responsive for a decent-sized package. Comfy all-round and smooth ride. Never gave me one problem....... but then I only owned it for a month before some dipsh*t rammed it and totalled it for me. Ahhhh.... memories.

Nissan has some great reliability. I'm approching the 300k mark on my '93 pickup and it is still going strong. I've got several friends with Altimas, Maximas and Sentras from the early 90s to current and they all say that they are great running cars with few if any problems.
