What is the procedure to dial a # into the U.K.? Never made an international call b4 and is it the same for a fax? [>:/] Thanks, BrenLover

Dial 011 + number You will be billed by your long distance carrier.

You will need to dial 011 for an international line. After that dial the country code (I believe the UK is 44), then the phone number which starts out with a city code.

That's exactly right. I have been calling my 23 old British med student and the country code is 44. It is the same for a fax.

That's what you're supposed to dial: 01144 208 123 12345 01144 is the country code for Britain, 011 for "out of the US", 44 for "into Britain"; 208 for London in this example, and 123 1234 for the actual number.

It didn't work guys. The phone # has 12 numbers in it 5 in the 1st group then 7 in the second. There is no "44" or " 011" in the number so here is what I dialed for exp. "01144 12345 1234567" didn't work???? What am I doing wrong? BrenLover

What city are you dialing. London has two city codes. For calling inner city the call pattern would be: 011 + 44 + 20 7 + The Number Outer city would be : 011 + 44 + 20 8 + The Number

They are city codes, much like area codes here in the US. Here is a listing. I don't see a 133. The United Kingdom country code: 44 The United Kingdom City Codes (using ATT): Aberdeen 1224 Alderney Channel Islands 1481-82 Bath 1225 Belfast 2890 Birmingham 121 Blackpool 1253 Bournemouth 1202 Bradford 1274 Brighton 1273 Bristol 1272 Cambridge 1223 Cardiff 2920 Carlisle 1228 Coventry 2476 Dover 1304 Dundee 1382 Durham 191 Edinburgh 131 Exeter 1392 Glasgow 141 Gloucester 1452 Guernsey Channel Islands 1481 Harrogate 1423 Ipswich 1473 Jersey Channel Islands 1534 Kenilworth 1926 Leeds 1532 Leicester 1533 Liverpool 151 London 207(Inner City) London 208(Outer City) Londonderry 1504 Manchester 161 Newcastle 1632 Northampton 1604 Norwich 1603 Nottingham 191 Oxford 1865 Penzance 1736 Plymouth 1752 Portsmouth 2392 Prestwick 1292 Reading 118 Sheffield 114 Southampton 2380

As you can see from my list Southhampton's city code is 2380. You number would then be 666 805. Do not dial the leading zero on the city codes. That zero is for internal UK calls.

What Entropy told me to dial worked but noone was there. Houston, Thanks for the list. Are there any hard andsteadfast rules to dialing into the UK without going insane? Something nice and simple a dolt like me can understand? BrenLover
Link Posted: 3/25/2002 12:43:57 PM EDT
So, for that last # I would dial 011 44 2380 666 805? So if its 4 digits drop the 1st 0 if its 3 just dial the 3 digits? Ok, that makes more sense. BrenLover

Just to forget that leading zero before the city code.

The (1)555-555-1234 system is unknown in Europe. They don't have the same number of digits for all phone numbers like in the US. Example: A number in Berlin (area code 030) would be 030-123 456 789, a number in Hintertupfing, Bavaria could be 087542-231. If somebody in Berlin would call above number within Berlin, he'd dial 123 456 789; people outside of Berlin, but still in Germany, would dial 030 123 456 789, and people in the US would have to dial 011 49 30 123 456 789. Cellphones are an entirely different matter: Somebody's cellphone would have the number 0171-12345678, and 0171 would be the "area" code for all the cellphones for one provider. Or to put it the other way around: if you see a German phone number that has an area code beginning with 017, it's definetely a cellphone, and you'll have to pay the extra charges (incoming calls are free for the cellphone user), and you won't know in which area the callee resides. It's quite similar in all European countries except France. So, in order to place your call to Southampton, you'd have to dial: 01144 2380 666 805 (You grouped your number wrong, that might have confused matters) 011 Dial into the international system 44 into Britain 2380 Southampton 666 805 your party
