What a fun day. Left at 6am to drive 3 hours in 30 degree temperature. Arrived around 9am and the wind was about 15-20 miles an hour. My face now feels windburned. Saw one guy running a 1919 type beltfed. It is the other model, can't remember which one. 30-06 caliber. I mostly shot my M16 and AR50L. Another guy from Northern VA had an AR50 and we blasted a 1/2" steel circle all day. Photo of the range. A gentlemen from the VA shoot last year shows up and shoots his mp5 with supressor. Then breaks out this. Full auto Belt fed HK-51b or 53b. Can't remember. Wow that sucker was almost as loud as our AR50's. I took some more photos but they sucked because it was dark under the cover and so bright right outside the cover. Around 11am Ross in VA (different ross than the one on here) shows up. He breaks out 8 big coolers. Heh. Each are full of magazines for his different weapons. All Full Auto. MP5, AR70, HK51&3, etc. If you stare at his weapon for longer than a few seconds he MAKE you shoot at least 2 magazines. He made one guy (1919 guy) shoot the HK51 or 3 with a fully loaded Beta C mag. His words were. Don't stop until you are finished. I don't want to hear a pause. Ross, you are the GREATEST!!! Baaammmmmmmmm. Awesome. To everyone who said they would come and bailed... sucks to be you. :)

Forgot the best part. When packing everything up some Grandfather with his two grandchildren saw my AR50. He said, what do you use that for, to shoot squirrels? Then he said to shoot people? I replied Yes, to shoot squirrels. I seemed convincing and he said, must be some big squirrels. I should have replied, yes, to shoot some people. [rolleyes]

Where in VA? Wish I would have known, me and the wife could have made it out there. Looks like it was literally a blast!

It was first posted on subguns. Then posted in the meetings forum here. The shoot was at Hite Hollow Shooting Range in the George Washington National Forest Officially sanctioned National Forest service range outside Staunton, Va.

Awesome! I'm glad you guys had fun. Now I really regret not going, but was pretty busy. Thanks for the pictures. I'm going to have to build a covered area for my range like they had there. Did they use asphalt or concrete for the base? It doesn't look like it would be too hard to make - some 4x4's, roof and corrogated panels. Maybe a good weekend project... Again, glad you guys had fun. I hope we can get a big farm again some day to really open up on. That place looked like a good second choice, though! Black Fox

The bottom was sandy pebbles. Some prisoners in a bus built it so I'm told. There should have been more people but they went to a range down near Blacksberg. Seems they had a Thompson, M11, M10, M16, 1919 and a 20mm Lahti. Doh.

It was a good time. Got to shoot MP5, HK51, AR-70, and DOA 9mm 7.5" upper 16. Good stuff. Quite a few rounds of .50 downrange. I believe it was the HK53b as the 51 is .223 and the 53's are .308. Interesting guns and interesting conversation. It was a great time, sorry if you missed it.

Can you give directions to this range and details on about it? It looks longer than 100 yards. What is the max range?

Longshot_va has the link to the range. The range was the Hite Hollow Shooting Range. The distance is approximately 200 yards shooting uphill at about 20%. It is a BITCH to keep walking up and down. I walked up about 7 times and died each time. heh. They have a separate pistol range too. So you can have a cease fire on one range and not the other.

Hey 7 Great job on the pics, mine didn't turn out well, still on that learning curve. Thanks to all that were there, especially those that let me play with their toys, OH! I guess that was everyone there. What a great time.

Very cool. So... when's the next shoot?
Link Posted: 3/28/2002 8:01:48 AM EDT
Hell, I'd be up for one every weekend. [:D] In reality I'll probably drive down to that range every other weekend or at least once a month.

Regular events at that range would be awesome! We definatly need to be abl eto car-pool though. I spent $23 on gas alone. The range is awesome though. Wish it was in my back yard! --LS

Can I just ask you one thing? What were you shooting at? I see this a lot--guys bring plenty of hardware and ammo, and then shoot it all into the dirt. Tell me you had some kind of targets setup? Or maybe I don't get something about full auto fun shoots? Some of the military rifle guys at my club have destroyed the range because they never shoot at actual targets, but instead just blaze away and screw up the target holders, rails, and impact areas. The club members want to now ban subguns and semi-auto military rifles. Uppity, yes, but the bad behavior of some of the members is the reason.

You got it bass ackwards. The 51 is .308 and the 53 is .223 Just remember to look at the last digit - a "1" is .308 and a "3" is .223. A "5" prefix indicates a short barrel. Thus the 51 is a short G3/91 and the 53 is a short 93/33. The 51b is beltfed and based off the (.308) HK21 beltfed while the HK23 is their .223 beltfed. I've got a 51 - what a scream. I love that gun.
