Sarah Brady skirted gun laws in buying son's rifle New York Daily News March 22, 2002 08:15:00 WASHINGTON - Gun-control advocate Sarah Brady bought her son a powerful rifle for Christmas in 2000 - and may have skirted Delaware state background-check requirements, the New York Daily News has learned. Brady reveals in a new memoir that she bought James Brady Jr. a Remington .30-06, complete with scope and safety lock, at a Lewes, Del., gun shop. "I can't describe how I felt when I picked up that rifle, loaded it into my little car and drove home," she writes. "It seemed so incredibly strange: Sarah Brady, of all people, packing heat." Brady became a household name as a crusader for stricter gun-control laws after her husband, James, then the White House press secretary, was seriously wounded in a 1981 assassination attempt on then-President Ronald Reagan. Brady writes in "A Good Fight" that the unnamed gun shop ran federal Brady Law and Delaware state background checks with great fanfare. The book suggests that she did not have her son checked, as required by Delaware state law. "(W)hen the owner called in the checks, it seemed to me he spoke unnecessarily loudly, repeating and spelling my name over and over on the phone," Brady writes. Amy Stillwell, a spokeswoman for The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said the federal Brady Law does not require background checks for intrafamily gun gifts. Stillwell said she did not know whether her son was checked under the state law. The Delaware Department of Justice says the state does not have an exemption for family gifts. "Scott is not a convicted felon, and he is not prohibited from owning a gun," Stillwell said. "Scott Brady could walk into a store and buy a - he is not a prohibited purchaser." Delaware Justice Department spokeswoman Lori Sitler said the purchase could be illegal under state law if Brady did not also say who she was buying the gun for and submit his "name, rank and serial number" for a full check. "You can't purchase a gun for someone else," Sitler said yesterday. "That would be a 'straw purchase.' You've got a problem right there." Anti-gun control advocates were surprised to hear of Brady's foray into their world. "We hope that it's innocuous and there's been no laws violated," said James Jay Baker, chief lobbyist for the National Rifle Association. "It's obviously interesting that Sarah would be purchasing firearms of any kind for anybody, given her championing of restrictive guns laws for everyone." ---

Can you spell hypocrite???
Link Posted: 3/22/2002 7:37:28 AM EDT
yes, BRADY
Link Posted: 3/22/2002 7:42:11 AM EDT
It won't matter. She'll have SOME lame excuse. You see, they aren't against guns. They are against the PEASANTS owning guns. Intellectual, elitists like themselves need guns for personal protection, and pleasure shooting, should the whim ever strike them. ________ Die, woman. You are my Constitutional enemy. Cancer couldn't have happened to a nicer person.
Link Posted: 3/22/2002 7:42:33 AM EDT
[spank] Ms Brady should disband her organization! If even she won't follow th rules.
Link Posted: 3/22/2002 7:51:13 AM EDT
This would be absolutely hilarious if she would be charged with violating Delaware state firearms laws. Unfortuntaely, the prosecutors in Delaware are probably too dickless to pursue this. Where's a DA like the one Oneshot got when you really need them, huh?
Link Posted: 3/22/2002 8:02:29 AM EDT
We'll have to wait and see how this plays out... Maybe we'll get lucky and the DA is pro 2A and decides to hammer her under her own law. If nothing else, it makes her look like a hypocritical ass to the general public. Almost as good as that MMM fanatic that shot an innocent man she thought shot her son.

Anyone remember Barbara Graham, the million-mom-marcher who got an illegal Tech-9 and shot & killed some guy with it because he dissed her daughter (nothing criminal, so far as I could find)? The excuses flew like pink elephants with dumbo wings. Of course, in liberal-land, these things exist, and fly. Another pink elephant, I see.
Link Posted: 3/22/2002 8:20:00 AM EDT
Why do you guys have your panties all in a knot? Don't you know that Barbara Graham, Sarah Brady, Diane Fienstein are all "better" than we are? Don't you know that the laws that they inflict upon US are not meant for THEM! Come on, get with the program... guns are only evil when they're owned by the general population. Jeez! I thought that years of network news, commie news(?) magazines and liberal papers would have re-educated you by now. [stick]

What if Sarah Brady is a closet ar15.com member? What if we correspond with her everyday and sometimes value it's opinion? Seems as if we are going to have to require background checks prior to membership. [:D]
Link Posted: 3/22/2002 8:44:42 AM EDT
Unbelievable. This should be on every newsbroadcast, and not just FOX. ... and yes she should be prosecuted if there is such a thing as justice in this country.

Master_Blaster: Barbara Graham (and her boyfriend) shot a man who she believed shot and killed her son. Only problems: they shot the wrong guy, paralyzing him, and they had 4 (illegal) pistols in the house when the DC PD got there. I believe she was found guilty on all counts. Kharn

Aww... doesn't like to be persecuted huh? The guy probably knew exactly who she was. And forget about state law, doesn't this go against Federal law as well? Doesn't there need to be a form 4473 filled out with the subsequent background check?

Why did the store owner sell her the gun in the first place? I would have used my right to refuse her service and shown her the door.

So,is she going to charged with a felony?

No, it's important that she be sold any firearms that she desires. A phone call afterwards to any and all media outlets is a requirement, however.

What chaps my hide is the fact that the NRA is basically sitting back and not doing anything! This is a perfect opportunity for them to DEMAND she be brought up on charges! That way it would show more people that many of these laws are ridiculous and that even anti-gun people can't follow them!! It like all those cheesy horror movies where someone ALWAYS has a chance to kill the monster yet they hesitate and miss the opportunity and eventually get killed themselves (Silver bullets don't do any good if you never fire them at the Werewolves).... Sorry guys I just had to blow off a little steam on this one....

People calm down. I don't like Sarah Brady any more than the rest of you, but its not illegal to buy a gun and give it to someone else. Its just illegal to buy a gun with the intent of selling it to someone else. People buy guns as gifts all the time. -SS

This story is confirmed and not a net myth? If this is true, why shouldn't we be appalled? It's complete hypocrisy and should be used to slam any of the vile crap that gets tossed on gun owners. If the NRA is taking such a lax attitude towards it, they should be bombarded by their members to take more aggressive action. Are their PR people idiots? P.S. So she may have purchased a long range and powerful sniper rifle (30-06 bolt action) for her son?

Now I don't know Deleware law, but the story does say that Deleware law requires the background check on the person you are buying it for.

AAAAHHHH!!!!! The salient point is not that a mother bought a firearm for her son, it's that Sarah Brady, the self appointed nemesis of law abiding firearms owners, the person who doesn't think any of YOU should have AR15s, PURCHASED A FIREARM. So basically if Feinstein, Schumer, or purchased a firearm, that would be just fine and jim dandy with most of you?

It’s also on the WSJ Opinion Journal site - Brady Evades Brady-like Law Celebrity antigun activist Sarah Brady "bought her son a powerful rifle for Christmas in 2000--and may have skirted Delaware state background-check requirements," the New York Daily News reports. The store where she bought the gun ran a background check on her but not on her son. While the federal Brady Law exempts intrafamily gift purchases, Delaware's background-check law does not. Brady also complains in her memoir that when the gun-store owner phoned in the background checks, "it seemed to me he spoke unnecessarily loudly, repeating and spelling my name over and over on the phone."

I think sarah Brady should be prosicuted to the full extent of the law, thats the supposed position of the NRA. Give her 10 years!

Amy Stillwell, a spokeswoman for The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said the federal Brady Law does not require background checks for intrafamily gun gifts. "Scott is not a convicted felon, and he is not prohibited from owning a gun," Stillwell said. "Scott Brady could walk into a store and buy a - he is not a prohibited purchaser." Oh-No. No-no-no-no-no!! Don't try that BULLSHIT tactic here bitch! It ain't JUST convicted felons. It's anyone with a restraining order against them. (someone in Delaware please just file a RO against "Scott Brady" now and have the BATFJBT storm his house and confiscate that "Christmas gift") It's anyone with a domestic violence conviction (misdemeanors included) in their past. It's anyone with a DUI conviction. In Maryland it's even anyone who's had ANY assault/battery conviction/plea bargain - including simple barfight misdemeanors (just ask Donald G. Arnold, Maryland's "Citizen of the Year") The leftwing knee-jerk rationalizing-away of their hypocracy is immediate and unchallenged in the media. Still[pissed] Edited to add: Now if the NRA really had their spit together they'd have a dozen private investigators examining every shred of Scott Brady's life just to see whether there's ANYTHING that might have prevented him from passing the background check. If so, then both Scott AND Sarah would clearly be in immediate violation of Federal Gun Laws - the very same laws she pushed to pass - "clink", buh-bye!
