zrxc77,
thanks. I thought those were called "middys", I guess dissy and middy are interchangable then?

BTW, I think DUPE is for duplicate, like this has been posted here before.

You're welcome, LeatherneckOIF2.

Dissy and middy aren't interchangeable.  Mid-length handguards are longer than standard carbine handguards, but shorter than the rifle handguards that a Dissipator uses.  Here is a comparison picture I threw together.  From the top to the bottom you see a standard carbine upper, a mid-length upper and a Dissipator upper:

(The standard carbine and mid-length pictures are from RRA, the Dissipator from Bushmaster.  I had to mirror the RRA uppers to make everything point in the same direction.)

Mid-lengths also differ in the length of their gas tubes.  As you might expect, the gas tube of a mid-length is longer than that of a standard carbine but shorter than that of a rifle.  Many consider the added length over a standard carbine to be a benefit because it stretches the gas pulse and reduces its peak, resulting in less violent cycling than a standard carbine.

Note that this is unlike the Dissipator that, despite its rifle-length handguards, still uses a standard carbine length gas system.

And yes, your explanation of "dupe" is correct.  Thank you.

Wow, I guess there's a lot I don't know about these things.
We got the standard ol' 20" barreled M16A2, and then the A4 in the sandbox. I've never handled an M4, but I know the Army liked them. I do hear lots of short-stroking stories about M4geries though.

Mine is a standard A2, I'm thinking about putting together an A4 style, but with a collapsible stock for my next one. Then maybe a varmint version, 24" bull, free floated handguard etc...

Thanks for the info, I know where to go the next time I think "what the hell is a ____?"

It would be cool if we had a glossary section somewhere on the webpage, like where "help" or "articles" is.

I actually thought we had one cause I remembered seeing a definition of acronyms and tried to find it. I couldn't find it but later on discoverd that I had tagged this thread.

They are posting to a thread so it bumps to the top of the "May Active Topics" section when someone posts to it.

ETA: Read the post directly above yours in this thread.

Sorry for the dupe.  I read the first hundred posts or so, and assumed (after not seeing it by then) that if it had been asked, it would have been added to the list.

Thanks for the info!

It's internet "hip speak". 'teh' is a common typo for 'the'. 'Ghey' is a way of saying "bad" without slandering 'gays'

It's something teenage girls contributed to internet vocabularies.

Foing on Urban Dictionary

Originated on AR15.com when a member (Shawnofthedead) was invited to a threesome that included a male and female and started a thread. He, in haste and against the advice of many members, said "fuck it im foing" and was never heard from since.

An obvious typo has now transformed the word "going" to "foing" on the ARFCOM boards.
