I've used a regular headset and an ANR (active noise reduction) headset and the ANR is certainly worth it.

Get Foreflight for a 3G iPad. This will make your flying experience a whole lot easier. You'll have all the charts for the US to include Sectionals, Hi and Low IFR enroute charts, all approach plates for the entire US, weather and much more all without having to manually update. I have been flying professionally for 23 years and think this is one of the best things to have.

I just bough a Leather jacket from US wings.
Will post a review probably next week when I get a chance to wear it. Today would be a great day for it here in the NW. 
edit: havent had a chance to really wear it other than around the house link its the indy legend texas steerhide (imported) , the nice CS lady stated that the leather is identical its just imported but still sewn here in the good old USA. I ordered the long as the fitting guide says over 6'1order long. I am 6'2 and could have probably gone with a regular but I prefer it a little longer around the waist (flight jackets all seem to run above the belt line) the sleeves are about 1/2" too long but when sitting and acting like I was flying, elbows bent, it is right to the wrist (also nice to pull my hands up into the sleeves when not wearing gloves). it was on sale for 215, 195 for regular size. sale ends today. the stitching looks great, zipper is a nice heavy duty one. the "worn leather" look is awesome. only dislikes are the waist straps but I guess this could give a bit more fit if needed, and no epaulets like the A-2 jacket. I did not want a jacket with the elastic band around the wrist and waist so this was well worth the dislikes. US wings also threw in a bunch of other goodies, a $10 gift card for orders over 200, a t-shirt, some random videos and books on the company owner and other Vietnam era vets. it looks like they are now giving hats instead of t-shirts . Will post pictures when I have more time. |

A little 1/4 drive 5/16 drive combination wrench set with some sockets and bits, from Lowes. Can't find a picture, but it is smaller than the Craftsman minidrivers.

The ANR kit from Headsets Inc is a good investment. I used them for years in my DC 13.4 headsets.. I have since switched to Bose X and am very happy with them. The Bluetooth sync with the cell phone works well. Unfortunately the cell phone only works up to 2000 ft or so.
Anyone have a solution to that? My name is Bob and I fly a Bonanza (said like I am at a meeting) |

A lot of us in the C-17 community either buy ours or have the AF-issued ones modified by Pop's Leather in Adana, Turkey. Great guys to deal with and they make some really nice stuff. Just remember, in the event of a fire Nylon jackets may get pretty nasty and melt to you. I'm not sure if the Nomex/Aramid flight jackets can be found on the civilian market but I would look into those instead of the nylon. I will also add that I never leave home to fly without my Skilcraft B3 All-in-one BLACK/RED PEN/PENCIL. |

Im brand new to flying but have two items that I got on strong recommendations from flying buddies and they are both good products.
1. Bose A-20 headphones. I'd never drop that kind of dough on headphones but my son works for the company so lets just say I got a very, very good deal on them! They work fantastic and even though I have a bit of hearing loss, I can hear perfect in the cockpit of my Cherokee 140. 2. I also have a really cool little hand held radio. It is a yaesu ETA-230. Got it for about $160 after rebate and worth every penny. Not only does it go in my gear bag when I fly, I also use the thing all the time at home. It has a really handy 10 channel programmable scan mode. You can plug in whatever frequencies you want to monitor and it automatically scans them. Great for keeping up with flight traffic in the area. I've tested it in the air and seems to work just fine. |

I am watching MzeroA's latest video and saw something ... amazing.
Sheepskin seat belt pads. The stiff shoulder belt in the Archer just has a way of riding above your shirt collar and on the side of your neck. $15 later, I am set up. Unfortunately they won't get here in time for my next XC.

Foreflight X 10. Best thing since dry socks. Filing IFR is a breeze. As for headsets I still like my D/C. I convinced my wife to let me buy Foreflight and an IPAD since it meant I would no longer have stacks of paper charts/plates lying around waiting to go into the recycling bin.

Bose A20s.
I've tried all kinds of headsets with varying results. Did all my training and a lot of flying after my checkride with a handful of used Ebay passive headsets. I liked the Telex with gel earcups the best. As far as ANRs, I was flying with a buddy while another instructor was giving him an IPC. He had the newest DC ANRs, I had some older Lightspeed ANRs that I scored off Ebay, and the right seat instructor had Bose A20s. So I got to compare all three back to back in flight in a Cherokee 235. The Bose ARE the quietest, hands down. At least for my ears. I think they even tune the earcups, when ANR is OFF, they are the loudest headset and really resonate with the exhaust drone. But when you push that button - the noise reduction is ridiculous, like magic. Two other things I won't fly without - a small kneeboard with scratch paper (I also keep my checklist, a small txpdr code chart, and a local practice area freq chart on it), and an EFB with a Stratux box for position and traffic awareness. I started out with Avare, which is FREE and works good with the build-it-yourself Stratux project for ultimate reasonable budget gear. Avare has all your required charts and shows own ship and ADS-B traffic just fine. Where it falls short is flight planning. Eventually I went to IFly GPS for my EFB. It is NEARLY as good as Foreflight, but runs on a Android Tablet. :-) |
