Glad I found this thread. While I smoke pipe occasionally (mostly stick to my cigars), I do love the craft that goes into it.
A good friend of mine is a pipe maker, and I could not fathom how much work and skill actually goes into making a pipe until I watched him make one! I was at his house one rare day (he lives in Nashville, I live in Miami) and I said "hate to talk about work... but can you show me a little bit of how you make a pipe". Turned out to be a great learning experience, very enjoyable to see a block of briar turn into an awesome shape! |

I made another pipe yesterday. This is a new "design" - so this one is sort of a prototype. I still need to polish it better, but you get the general idea. I like the fact that you matched the stem to the shank. attention to detail brings it all together!

I also finished two new pipes this week. The workspace is a little cluttered, because I was screwing around with testing a new Form 1 suppressor - AND I am experimenting with bowl coating of some of the pipes I have made recently. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/1715/P1013471_JPG-499008.jpg But here's a closer look at the two new ones. The black one is made of bog oak (morta), so there's no stain/finish on it; it's just polished with some tripoli. Both of them have acrylic stems. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/1715/P1013481_JPG-499007.jpg View Quote |

I'd like to pick up a morta pipe someday, I know they're more expensive though View Quote Morta is not necessarily more expensive than good quality briar, so they shouldn’t be that much pricier. |

Been smoking pipes forever and never heard of Morta.
Went down the Google rabbit hole and now I want one. Of course I'd never spend $350/750 on a pipe--maybe in my next life... ETA: Oops--now I see some for $80. |

Those all look awesome. The grains are really nice and I like the new shapes, especially the poker sitter and the wide volcano. I actually think the little flaw fits in well with the aesthetic of the rustic freehand.

Nice work OP.
I miss the smell of pipe tobacco. A machinist I used to work with smoked in the shop. 1980s. |

So....about that website View Quote and The deal is that I originally set up my website using GoDaddy’s website builder, and then a friend of mine (who is also an arfcommers) who does web hosting and web design as a hobby, said that he could put something much better together for me, and cheaper. So I agreed and transferred the hosting to him, and he did, and it looked great. However, then his good intentions seem to have gotten the better of him,and he wanted to improve the site, and add more sophisticated systems to manage inventory, baskets, etc. ... and since then the websit has basically been in limbo, with no progress. Apparently what happened is that his regular day job got super-busy, and while he clearly feels bad about it, he simply has not been able to spend enough time to get the site up. I’ve told him to just revert it back to the previous version without all the sophisticated stuff, but that hasn’t happened. So yeah, at this point it’s very frustrating, because i’ve basically had no website at all for over 6months. I’ve got fancy business cards to hand out to people with the website address, but obviously cannot use them. |

I'm going to make a few blowfish pipes soon.
... also, I am trying to resist the STRONG temptation to buy a compressor and a small sandblasting blasting cabinet. I tell myself that the compressor can be useful for other things, like one of those pneumatic wrenches for when I swap wheels on my wife's car. |

Very cool. My grandfather smoked a pipe. Loved the aroma, and smelling a good pipe brings back plenty of good memories.
Sadly I was too young to pick up much, maybe I'll have to give it a go. |

Cautionary point: it usually takes a LOT of juice (air) to run a blaster. You're probably not going to get away with a small compressor for this. I occasionally use a cheapo HF gun outdoors with mine and I have to stop constantly to let the compressor catch up. Make sure you check your specs before you buy! (And let's be realistic here; we BOTH know you're gonna cave. Sooner or later... ) View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I’ve actually talked myself off the ledge (for now) since I read up on the topic more, and realize that even 20 - 30 gallon compressors may not be enough, and I ‘m not willing to shell out the big bucks ... yet |

The website is more or less up - and I could definitely use some feedback and advice!
http://www.vinlandpipes.com - or just google "Vinland Pipes" ... DISCLAIMER: all of the prices are very tentative right now. I'm still not sure how to price things - so that can absolutely change. I ended up doing it myself, so I know it looks pretty amateurish! It's currently optimized for PC/Laptop, so it might still be a bit wonky on mobile devices, and obviously doesn't look as nice. I'm having some trouble sizing images for mobile. (I'm using HostGator, and their Website Builder, btw) Any and all suggestions and feedback is welcome. What I am trying to decide right now is whether or not to spend more money on additional website features. As the site is right now, it's pretty cheap - but I am limited to six pages, and no e-commerce stuff (i.e. carts, inventory, payment processing, etc.). If I upgrade a little (maybe another $10/month), I can get an unlimited number of pages, which means that I could have a page for EACH pipe that is available for sale ... so if you clicked on the picture on the "For Sale" page, you would be taken to a separate page with lots of larger pictures for each pipe. It would cost a LOT to upgrade to the full "shop" features (like an extra $30/month) or something like that, and I'm pretty sure I am way to cheap for that. Plus, I'd be surprised if I sold ONE pipe a month. But, I am not sure whether it would be worth it to even upgrade a little - or just keep it as-is, and tweak the existing design. I plan on setting up an Etsy page as well (which I believe is pretty cheap), and maybe use Facebook too - so I wonder if the site really needs to be any fancier than it already is. |
