Someone needs to have one of their graduate students update the website! |

Quoted: A pipe has been shipped out to Qatar today. ... man, I just haven't been making many pipes lately. I think it's because I love summer and the heat so much, I don't want to be cooped up in the workshop - but want to be outside. Perhaps I need to have a formal "pipe making season" (like from November 1 to April 30 or something) and then a summer hiatus. View Quote |

Quoted: Can’t wait for #138! View Quote It's going to be awesome - UNLESS i fuck up the drilling, and then I am going to throw myself out of a tall window. If I don't fuck it up, you will be impressed. I deliberately picked a piece of wood with exposed plateau and with VERY tight grain, so that I knew I would get excellent birdseye grain on the bottom, and nice flame. So far, there are no visible flaws, so I think it's going to be amazing. ... if I don't fuck it up. Crap. Now I am totally in my own head, and really nervous about the drilling. |

As an aside, I am genuinely surprised that this thread hasn't archived yet. It's been a long time since anyone posted in it.
I think I have discovered that pipe-making is more of a "winter" activity for me, best when it's dark and cold outside. So perhaps winter is when I actually make my inventory, and then (maybe/hopefully) sell it during the summer. |

I didn't fuck it up!! Hooray.
I'll be trying to finish it tonight. |

Beautiful. Very nice grain and looks perfect to my untrained eye. Been looking to make my own/buy a pipe, thanks for the info and pics.

That is some fantastic grain.
You still need to get a sandblaster to rusticate away those flaws that appear. |

View Quote I would definitely enjoy having a sandblaster - and it would be very cool to experiment with different ways to use it - but when I looked into it, doing it properly would be pretty difficult and expensive, so I have passed on the idea. |

On a completely different note, I absolutely adore this pipe:

@DK-Prof
You have a serious talent for this. I love your style...reminds me of a mix of Danish and Japanese styled pipes. Very cool. Would love to order a pipe or 2 from you to add to my collection, maybe even something a little custom, if you are in the mood to do a custom. Should I contact you through this site or your Vinland site? Didn't see a whole lot on your site, so not sure if you are just super back logged or busy with other things in life at the moment. |

It’s a VERY large bowl. Full inch diameter, and almost 2 inches deep.
The problem is that the pipe obviously gets heavy, so I want the walls of the chamber/bowl to be as thin and possible in order to keep the weight down ... but too thin, and you run the risk of burning through eventually. We’ll see how it works. If it burns through in a year or two, then I’ll be making him a third pipe! |

@dk-prof
My gf gave me a pipe making kit for Christmas, and I'm still playing with ideas. Do you think it is possible to do a metal inlay on the bowl using CA glue and metal powder? Or would there be thermal expansion and cracking? |

Obviously, the thicker the bowl walls are, the less chance of any problems related to expansion or cracking. So as long as you are not trying to make a pipe with really thin bowl walls, I think you should be fine. But ... it's not something I have ever tried (or seen in person), so I am really just guessing. |

Quoted: I've finally finished a pipe that I've been working on for a while. It's actually a custom pipe (and a bit of a replacement for the father of an arfcommer). I made him a pipe in 2019, which was a very large pipe, and now he would like another - with slightly different dimensions. Also, the pipe I made for him has developed some cracks, so I am of course sending him this replacement. The original pipes was made of olive wood, and I wonder if the cracking is because Olive wood is not as hard/dense as briar ... so this new one is made of briar. I think it turned out really nice, but boy, Billiard-style pipes are hard to make by hand. https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/1715/SMALL0011-1883308.jpg https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/1715/SMALL0009-1883307.jpg https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/1715/SMALL0020-1883313.jpg https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/1715/SMALL0019-1883312.jpg https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/1715/SMALL0017-1883311.jpg https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/1715/SMALL0014-1883309.jpg View Quote Looks fantastic! All by hand? Even where the shank and stem meet? I know most use a lathe or something to make those the perfect fit...if you're doing that by hand...it looks like a great fit! One suggestion....and it has nothing to do with the design or construction of your pipes. Can you include something of know size in your pictures? Like a tin of tobacco or a Czech tool? Will give us a better idea on its size. Hard to tell how large or small they really are when on a white background with nothing else in the picture. |

All by hand? Even where the shank and stem meet? I know most use a lathe or something to make those the perfect fit...if you're doing that by hand...it looks like a great fit! Yeah, I do not use a lathe. It is definitely tricky to make the shanks, and to get a really clean fit - since briar and vulcanite obviously have different hardness, so you cannot just sand them equally. One suggestion....and it has nothing to do with the design or construction of your pipes. Can you include something of know size in your pictures? Like a tin of tobacco or a Czech tool? Will give us a better idea on its size. Hard to tell how large or small they really are when on a white background with nothing else in the picture. That's a great idea, and I totally should do that. On the official website, I do list dimensions once you go to the page for each specific pipe - but something for scale is a really good idea. I will try to remember that! |
