Two year old unit. Hit the remote last night...nothing. Last used in March 2017 and worked fine.

Remote has a light that blinks when pushed but nothing happens at unit (should hear a beep prior to ignition)
I can turn the switch on the black box from REMOTE to MANUAL and it get flame no problem ( I'm certain if I add batteries to the pack I'd get fan)
I let it run for quite a while, heats up, but no auto fan kick on.

Could it be something as simple as the remote batt? (it's one of those odd ball 23A 12V mini batts)

Any help?

Checked the battery  with volt meter...

5.4v should be 12v. So, a weak battery won't run the remote sensor.

Bought new batt, works fine.
