Planed & prepped 450bf of pine today.
Half the stack planes down to 3/4 and jointed on one edge. 
The other half planed to 7/8 and jointed on one edge. This pile is going to be glued up for window panels.

I have 35 windows remaining all of which require 84" tall angled side boards between 9-11" wide.
I decided rather than consume my wide stock for paint grade trim I'd glue a bunch of the 5-1/2" boards up. For those of you who've seen these craftsman branded molding heads for the table saw I've had plenty of good luck using them. I have 3 or 4 sets of knives as they tend to run $20-30 for the entire set at rummage sales and thrift shops. 
Like most folks I made a wooden insert for the table saw that I use specifically for this molding head. 
This set of knives when centered on the edge of the piece cuts a tight joint for gluing boards together. When I run a bunch as in this case I much prefer this method. 
All ready for glue up.

More boards! Got 6 windows worth of boards glued up, planed to 3/4, jointed and sanded. I'm pleased with the way the joints turned out.
I have a slight addiction to Craigslist and old American iron. I bought a belsaw planer for this house project and was pleased using it just as a planer. With the molding on my mind I started looking into knives and jibs for moldings, realizing the jibs & weights alone were about $85 for a set. Spare parts are a bit pricy although available too... So I found another complete machine on Craigslist for $75. Wife was not happy, who needs two after all? Now I've hogged a few thousand board feet through the planer alone, with a few thousand lineal feet of moldings to make, I'd really like to have spare parts & extra jibs & weights. I have a chain on one machine which doesn't look like it'll make it through the project and I'm on a second drive belt. So I did it again... picked up belsaw #3 today to use as a parts machine (this one came with a bunch of extra jibs too - yeay!) 
On the bright side wifey isn't upset about this one considering the other two machines already paid for themselves a few times over

My friend borrowed one of my clamps. I had never used it. Somehow he got it stuck on whatever he was working on and could not remove it with the handle on, so he cut it off.

New stand, belts, and a proper safety switch for the planer.
Mounting the switch was a bit tricky but it was fun to make some brackets to mount it where it was most accessible.

I like the siding and color. Did you or do you do siding professionally?
I split wood all damn day. My best friend and I both heat our homes with wood, so we harvest and split together (but stack ourselves). Having two people makes the work exponentially faster and adds a great deal of moral support. The picture does it no justice, this glorious pile is 8' tall at its highest point. I officially have enough for next year. We had a bad windstorm up here last weekend and there's tons of trees to be harvested, we are about to be stacking for the third year out. After that, everything we harvest and split we will sell until after next year.  Attached File |

The missus asked if I'd make her some frames. Having never done it before I decided to see what I could do with some scrap I had. So I did a white pine with a red oak inlay

Butt plugs, kitchens, struts and siding, sounds like the making of an arfcom country song
Vacation day for me, picked up 300lbs of polystyrene for the thermoform so it's game on to try and finish out our first window. 150lb roll: 
First styrene pattern cut and in place: 
I gotta tell you. I'm glad we have the DIY forum because I was ready to glue the styrene up to the pink foam with construction adhesive. I read in one of the other threads that it would melt the foam so I used great stuff foam as a glue instead and it's working perfect

One of the bathroom sinks in my sons house was leaking. My daughter in law asked me if I could take a look at it. I hate lazy people.
I look under the sink and find the cause of the leak. The drain pipe coming out of the wall has a pipe in it smeared with some type of plumbers putty. In that pipe the pipe that is attached to the P trap is glued in. The pipe going to the P trap falls off the sink drain pipe when I touch it. The round seal that is suppose to tighten up is missing. I run over to Home Depot and get the two different size seals ( they came 2 to a pack) for 97 cents each. I checked the other bathroom sink and it is put together the same way. Looks like tomorrow I will take the other sink apart and fix it.. |

Tonight the wife went to a seminar hosted by the UW and WI DNR about processing game meats. Being a worthy cause (venison sausage mmmmMm) I told her to leave the kiddos home with me and we'd have some fun. As soon as the wife left my daughter looks at me and says "let's build anything!"
So we cut some shapes out of poplar. Kids sanded and painted them up.

My Grandson said he had to have a trailer hitch for his F150. He had cardboard, clear packing tape, and a piece of rope. He drilled the holes.
How did we do? |
