I am not a big Clavell fan even though I enjoy his movies.  But he wrote this one about the 30 Years War, set in the mountains of southern Germany.  A band of mercenaries takes over a little hamlet and gives insight into why we have the 3rd amendment

Michael Caine and Omar Sharif star in it, it's pretty good
