Just checked this movie out on DVD. Very impressed.

It's a French movie, starring Audrey Tauttou (cute girl from Amelie), Tcheky Karyo, and a small part featuring Jodie Foster (and she gets down and dirty too).

Very hard to describe simply, but it's a mix of love story, war movie, mystery and fable. And, amazingly being all that AND French, it's quite good.

The story is basically that a young woman's fiance, serving in the French Somme during WWI is accused of self-mutilation and sent to no-man's land with 4 other soldiers accused of the same as a death sentence, and she refuses to believe he's died and sets about finding out what happened to him. As she finds witnesses, each presents a new version of the events of that day.

It's told in pieces, from the perspective of all those involved, and that's where you see quite awesome trench warfare scenes, some graphic sex scenes, some comedy and the star's funny and frustrating search for information.

It's very well acted, beautifully shot and it's on par with the biggest budget hollywood films for scale. It is sub-titled, however, and there's no dubbed version on the DVD. So, if you can't handle the words on the bottom of the screen, here's some movies by Michael Bay with easy to follow dialogue and big explosions:

Seriously, the subtitles are easy to follow, because much of the scenes requiring them are slow and don't require bouncing back and forth from reading to following action.

The war scenes are very well done, lots of cool WWI guns (Lebels galore!), and very realistic.

Highly recommend it, and the wife/GF might just enjoy this one too because it sort of fits everybody. Trust me, the love stuff is palatable, because there is some fine eye-candy in this movie.
