I was streaming Clone Wars through Netflix and just received the series on blu ray disc as it's going to be dropped.

Me and my kids both noticed that it looks and sounds better on my 2.5 mbps DSL or Verizon LTE cast from phone.

IS THIS NORMAL?

I compared season 4, episodes about the war on Umbara on a 46" 9 year old plasma and a 55" TCL purchased last week.

Blu ray player is a 5 yo Panasonic basic

Are you using a HDMI cable out of your blu-ray player?  It makes a big difference (vs using the RCA connectors).

Have you compared other movies and only Clone Wars looks and sounds worse?   That could be the player's video and sound settings.

The BD player's age could be another factor but I have a Samsung 3600 BD player that is even older than yours and still plays disks better than Netflix's streaming (20mnps fiber optics Internet) .   I have problems with newer disks where it sometimes freezes and I have to power it down.  Probably those "anti-piracy" encodings the studios keep adding and only work to inconvenience legal owners since all these movies are available for downloading in torrents.

Check the settings on your bluray player, it might be only outputting 720p (possibly even 480p). Make sure you're also connecting it to the TV via HDMI.

Several possibilities:

-What kind of cable are you using from the bluray?
-If your tv is 720p you may be poorly downscaling the bluray 1080p
-Bluray uses mpeg2 encoding which may be noisier than streaming h264

Thx for the replies.

I Am using HDMI cables.

I will check my player's output here today.

I recall watching other movies and being underwhelmed with them on blue ray (Rogue 1, harry potter series).

Well, that's A LOT better!

I was sure I had set the HDMI output to 1080, but it was on 480.  I switched it between 1080i and 1080p and settled on 1080P.  WAY better!

thanks for the help!

Yes, 1080p is superior to 1080i so correct choice there. Should be quite the jump in quality from 480p to 1080p.
